Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashquai or MAzda 6 or CX5?
Discussion
I've been asked to help my brother & SiL find a new car with a budget of 20k (so likely a year old unless people know of any cracking new deals).
After sending them a long list of possibilities they have narrowed it down to the 4 mentioned above and will be looking at them over the next couple of weeks but I'm after real world opinions of them, good or bad, what model/engine to go for in each case? auto or manual etc?
They have a 3 year old son so it needs to be reasonably roomy, they don't have oodles of cash so reliability, running costs, warranty length etc are all considerations along with comfort and toys.
I'm not after alternative suggestions just advice on those already mentioned

I have a Kia Sportage KX-3 (on lease). It's the AWD, second-highest spec model with a 140(ish) bhp diesel engine.
I have to say that it's a very impressive bit of kit. It's not the last word in performance obviously (there is a more powerful engine available in the KX-4), but it's not going to be my only car for much longer.
It is packed full of toys and is very comfortable. Fit and finish is all good and while I've only done around 4k miles so far, I cannot fault it. It also have a seven year warranty of course.

I got a sportage Kx-2 for mrs morgrp - been a great car so far - in terms of value and customer service - you're hard pushed to beat it - There is a new one coming soon so deals to be had on the out going model. Alternatively, wait for the new one to be released - Easily the best looking of the lot
I just took a lease on a Qashqai (1.2 Tekna), very impressed with it. We looked at the sportage but couldn't find one that came with a full heated windscreen which was an issue for us (had heated windscreens for years now!)
My uncle has a mazda and it is very impressive and economical for a 2.0 petrol.
I think the list price for our QQ was £23600 for a top of the range so you could prob drop down the range and get a new one, same for the Kia I would have thought?

Space wise none of the Soft roaders there will hold anything like the Mazda 6. A friend had a Sportage and the Boot is quite small. The others I aren't familiar with although I thought the "old" Qashquai was a bit shallow in the boot area. I agree about the 2.0 Petrol in the Mazda and my experience of Petrol Mazdas is that they run forever. The Qashquai now has the 1.6 DIG-T Turbo as well which would make it entertaining and economical.

I know that this sort of comment is as predictable as the tides and that I'm a boring bd for saying it, but:
Presuming they can't be persuaded that a similar, but much cheaper, car over three years old will not be an unreliable deathtrap, I'd go for the Kia. Drove one 2,500 miles round the midwest of the USA a few years ago and was very impressed. With the balance of a seven-year warranty and having heard some good things about Kia customer service in the UK that'd be where my money went.

soft roader vs saloon - hard to advise really.
Softroaders as someone has pointed sometimes don't actiually have that big a boot and do less MPG than equivalent hatch/saloon.
As long as you are not doing high milage 7 year warranty on the KIA has to be a winner, if doing high miles then Hyundai is the better warranty. If you are looking at Saloons as well - what about the i40/Optima a 1 year old one with remainder of warranty is a bit of a billy bargain. And the i40 estate is a very handsome car.
I agree the Sportage is much better looking than the Hyundai i35.

Yep Our Sportage was 22k list but got it for less and is well specced for the cash, a boggo model comes in at well under 20k with a deal.My uncle has a mazda and it is very impressive and economical for a 2.0 petrol.

Just as a quick update we looked at the Qashqai which they loved.
then went to Kia and they were disappointed by the interior quality compared to the Nissan
Then they looked at the Optima as a bit of a curveball and they loved it. Loads of equipment as standard, oodles of room and a very comfy ride - nothing to set the road on fire but a pleasant and comfy place to do the miles in.
As such they'll shortly be purchasing an ex-demo spec 3 in Pearl white, 7 year warranty is a great help to them as well.
