HI everyone,

I'm about to get new tyres put on my RR but I want the wheels attending to first, they are a bit minging. The edges of the spokes are blistering all the way along, which would in theory be do-able for one of these driveway touch-up companies that repairs kerbing and the like. However, upon looking behind the wheels, the paint is coming off in massive flakes nearly all the way around, on all 4 wheels, to leave a corroded bare metal surface (shown as best as possible in the last photo). Additionally, one of them has a small flat spot that needs pulling out. IMO this takes them far beyond the abilities of a mobile company and is going to require all of them to be blasted and resprayed from bare metal. Would you agree, or are they still saveable in situ? I ask because sending them off means having the vehicle sat on axle stands on the drive for a week unless I can borrow a set from someone else, which is obviously a massive hassle.

Any opinions (and recommendations of good mobile and send-off refurb companies local to south cheshire) would be gratefully welcomed.
Thanks!

Have you looked at replacing them?

Contact Chris Weaver at Exel Wheels: http://www.exelwheels.co.uk/

Chris's business is different insofar as he will lend you a set of wheels whilst he takes yours away for refurb. Chris is a genuinely nice guy and always does a superb job (he's done 2 sets of Porsche alloys and one set of split-rim BBS BMW wheels for me, so I've some experience of the results).

Having Chris refurb your wheels is also a great opportunity to change the colour if you fancy something different. There are dozens of examples of his work on his website (including my BMW split-rims somewhere).

I've just found pics of the 997 wheels Chris did for me and the BMW split rims:

Edited to add - the BMW wheels are over 20 years old, the rims were bent and so corroded you'd have sworn they were only fit for the scrap yard. The transformation Chris effected was absolutely stunning. They're now on my restored '85 635CSi and look amazing.

Have a look at Pristine Wheels. They do a wheel exchange programme through their many agents across the country - if they have a matching set in stock they refurbish them and send them to the agent. You then pitch up at the agent where your tyres are removed from your rims and refitted to the refurbished rims which are then balanced and refitted to your vehicle. Pristine the keep your rims for the next customer that comes along. Quick, easy and convenient but Pristine are not the cheapest but do a thoroughly good job . . . . . . and they know what they are doing!
