Minding my own business on Gosport High Street (pedestrianised) I was wandering with an intent looking for an estate agents to pick up some keys.

Suddenly found myself being pushed off my feet by a shopping trolley that was not stopping and had come from behind me. Turned out after I had fallen on to the front of it that it was a Disability Scooter being piloted by an old duffer who had not come off the power.

Rather than apologise for taking me out - he accused me of wandering into his path (if I'd known he was sneaking up behind me at speed I would not have done so obviously....). and drove off. No hint of concern - no are you ok etc.....

As it happened a couple of older women were concerned to check on me and said that he had very nearly done the same to them a few minutes ago.

Tonight I have a rather sore leg and ankle. Lucky I did not fall over as I think it could easily have been broken. Had I been elderly rather than a chunky Northerner some damage could easily have been done.

There were a couple of PCSO's around and I had a word. They chased the man down, but he was not really accepting that he should be careful on the streets.

So watch out there - you never know when the buggers are going to get you......

Because mobility scooters are legally an equivalent to being a pedestrian, he can't be banned or charged with careless driving.

I wonder if there might be grounds for an assault charge, though? One for SP&L, mebbe.

Have to admit - from the subject line, I thought it was going to be this...

These people are pretty poor... I understand they're at a disadvantage by needing to use it, but don't be a dick. I'm sure he'd be a tt even if he didn't have the scooter. Glad you're okay though.

Had to break out the first aid kit as lost some skin on my ankle and it was rubbing... Not ever so impressed after I took the plaster out of it's wrapping.

I don't think he's seeking to have a go at all people who use invalid scooters. Some users can be a bit careless with them. When I worked in a supermarket we had someone reverse into a stack of wine and destroy £700 worth of stock. The store smelled boozy all day. A friend of mine saw someone in a newsagent's store get the rotating newspaper stand get caught on her scooter and she went off up the street towing it behind her. You can't tar all users with the same brush though, enough people do that when it comes to car users.

At the back end of them, above each wheel, is a little silver lever. Twist them into the middle and you'll take it out of gear, so you can stand and berate them for as long as you want.

My extremely spritely 86 year-old great aunt was kncoked over by a much younger, much fatter woman on on one of these death chariots last year, and is only just about recovered. They are a 'kin menace.

Very true. My OH was scalded in a café after one of these clowns knocked 4 or 5 tables over & spilt coffee all over her leg. No apology from the woman. I can't see why they don't need some sort of test.

Yesterday I saw one of these overtaking a bicycle that was going past a parked car. I had to chuckle.

Fact of the day; They can only go 4mph on pavements but are allowed to reach 8mph on the roads which is why you often see them bouncing along next to the Kerb.

I spent some time in Gosport last year (for work, not from choice!) and it's mobility scooter central, more scooters there than Chelsea tractors in Chelsea!

Fact of the day (II) - the 8mph scooters are a different legal class, and need to be registered with DVLA. They'll have a speed range switch - usually labelled with a hare and a tortoise - which MUST be in "slow"/"tortoise"/4mph to be on the pavement. Mind you, it's surprising how fast 4mph actually is.
