What will your line of work be that requires a boot like the Jetta but not the Golf?
Service technician is my line of work even though im 17 im happy and just feel the way the boot is it will be more practicle plus extra leg room in back over the Golf which will be better for long trips with family smile just gotta decide on the Manual or Auto and source a good used one either 1.4 or 1.6 definatley be a Jetta though
Small cars with slush boxes don't really work.

Hi Matty0194
The Jetta internal space is IDENTICAL to the Golf there is no extra legroom

I work in the engineering industry NONE of our technicians have saloon cars for work. They all have hatchbacks be it a small van or a supervisor a hatchback car. Bigger vans where needed and is gas then vented vans accordingly.

Going by your work requirements to make it easier then the Golf is the superior choice the Jetta is the poor option.

Not being funny, but the "German reliability" was back in the 80's and early 90's, when they were built really, really well. When I was looking to buy a Mk3 Golf all the ones I was looking at were heaps of rust. More than once I was told that "well, it's an old car, mate" despit turning up in a MK2 golf 10 years older with a rock solid body! They've been trading on that ever since.
Yep my 1987 Mk2 Polo was utterly bomb proof. It was abused terribly (first car, zero mechanical sympathy and even worse clutch control) and it just soaked it up and never went wrong. My 1999 Mk4 Golf felt like a much higher quality product but many key components were made of marzipan. Shame, the german reputation used to be genuinely justified once upon a time.

The company got two Passats with the 4Motion for work and site visits so id dissagree if you look at a saloon they have a deeper and longer boot some guys have A4 Saloons for work and the boot is like a cargo hold

He is 17...... Knows everything. Knows nothing. Possible he has ended up in the boot of the A4 though!!!!

On the other hand we could agree with him.

In the end its his money.

Personally I like the styling of the Jetta over the Golf. Its also less common.

I've had a coupe and saloon for my last 2 cars and I find them quieter (no boot space open to the cabin) and have had no problems with space (I transport either MTB or road bike at least once a week).

Looking on Atrader and Ebay petrol Jettas in your price range aren't that common.
When you include diesels they are mostly high mileage.

You may have to go for a Golf unless you are patient.

Lots of 1.6 FSI's for under £3k.

"The company has got two..."

So your buying the car strictly for work purposes - trust me a hatchback is a lot more practical than a saloon re boot access.
Hardly any saloons are optioned with rear seat fold down generally you'll be taking larger sized items and may also require roof bars to carry even larger bulkier stuff.

Plus if your expected to use your own vehicle for work duties it is not reasonable without them part financing this car for you. Or you actually let them provide a car worry free then the best option.
Lastly if you do modify the brakes it's likely you'd not be permitted to use it for work duties as it would breach their own insurances and liabilities.

Its not how big it is, it is what you do can do with it! wink

I used to have a A4 quattro. Lovely car, not that reliable, but interior felt nice. Trouble is the boot entrance struggled with anything bigger than a handbag. Sure it was reasonably big for soft bags but useless if you wanted to put a fridge in it...........

Oh and the handling was a bit boring frown
