Always wanted a Clio 182 but I've never been able to get over the obvious fact that it looks like a little girls car and i'm too self-conscious about these things.
That's quite sad really.
Yeah, i'm aware. When I was looking for my last weekender I was looking at them quite keenly but always had that niggling thing that I just didn't like the look of it. Didn't help when I showed a picture of one to my wife and she remarked that it looked like a young girls car, which only re-enforced my view. I thought the black ones almost got away from that, but yeah, i'd be the first to admit i'm sad/a pussy/self-conscious.

My sensible side still tells me I need to replace my NC MX5 with something that has back seats.

Judging by the comments on this thread, this will be just the thing - after all, I've got used to driving a girl's car and having people want to race me all the time!

One of the best cars I've owned. Full fat with both cup packs. So much fun and surprises many people.
I bought one to replace stupidly tuned original (proper) mini as I was doing more mileage. You could rag the hell of this clio and still return just under 30mpg consistently. Handles so well too. Kept it for 4 years and it didn't cost me a penny apart from service items etc! Mine was super reliable but I'm not sure everyone had that experience.

Anyone else remember the melting steering wheels? Also how happy you were when you discovered even more power when you "clicked" down the gas pedal? biggrin

I think I've found my keep forever car with my EVO IX but if I have to do more mileage I'll be getting a 182 as run-around no questions.

Congratulations Ben on picking up such a nice example of a Trophy at a good price.

A few months ago I was lucky enough to buy a mint condition two owner Trophy with 38500 on the clock and both my wife and I love it. It really is the Mini Cooper S of the early 21st century and we plan to take it to France to tackle the Route Napoleon and the mountain passes in Northern Italy later on this year.

Sure it isn't as good a tourer as our other Clio, a Phase 2 V6, but at least it carries some passengers and all our luggage.

I will follow your ownership on PH with interest.

Jon.

Remember proverb "A Monk who takes offerings from the hand of a woman will be reborn as someone with 500 years without rest" If you are happy driving this car it is okay but it might mean trouble for you!

I also had a Clio 182 with the cup packs. Bought it new and only kept it for 3 months.

I was doing around 800 miles a week and in that short time, while in parts it was fun, I was convinced I needed something more comfortable, economical, quieter and better built. Went for a Golf Ed30.

No tears when I sold the 182 and I don't miss it one bit.

Kept the Ed30 for 3 years and really miss that though.
Same here, I ran a clio 172 for over a year, one the best Hot Hatch I have driven, but hated it in the end, and was glad to see it go. It turned out to be ridiculous expensive to repair, £800+ for a Cambealt change. WTF!. and the list go on. But doing long mile in these cars are not fun at all, and the end of the day I was glad when I could get out of the thing, put me of buying French cars for life. But I would drive one again. biggrin

That's outrageous for a cambelt change.

I wouldn't fancy one as a daily either, mind. Long journeys on boring roads are tiring.

Every time I see someone mention the cambelt price it goes up! It's less than £400 for just the cambelt or just over £600 for cambelt, dephaser pully and water pump. And this is from someone who will do a better job than Renault themselves....

I owned #151 a year or so ago. It was a low mileage minter. I sold it frustrated with it due to the high motorway miles I was doing and lack of straight line power. I replaced it with a 997 but have since sold that and bought a slightly modified 182 FF with both cup packs. I'm back having fun again which is something I missed with the Porsche. The running costs are so cheap that I'm enjoying the project of bringing it back to rude health. I've bought some bilstein coilovers and am selling all the go faster bits which really just make you slower and noisier. I think the 182 is fanatstic value compared to a trophy and not really much worse a car. I also feel I can lightly modify it without upsetting the Trophy police.

I'm also finding the standard seats comfier than the beautiful recaros in the Trophy for commuting so I'm kind thinking of keeping them in.

I do miss my trophy dearly. However I made a decent amount of cash catching thier rise and the 182 I would feel happier abusing on a daily basis. It's also not turning pink which is a bonus.

I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat if the insurance wasn't nearly double the price of the car, that's with 2 years NCB as well!!

Try Greenlight, they specialise in them.

My broker actually apologised for the quote he was going to give me and explained it as "If they're not being crashed by the owner they're being stolen, and then crashed. When they crash it's usually four young kids in the car and is likely to result in life changing injuries with medical bills for the rest of their lives."

Cheery thought for you there smile

I love my 182, I too can't see the Trophy as being worth the current premiums they're getting, but that's not a criticism of the car in any way. It's more that the market has gone a bit mental and people aren't looking at the values rationally. It's the whole "future classic" thing.

I put 36k on a 182 but sold it as I was doing too many miles. I think I spent about as much in parts (usually front suspension bits) as I did in fuel but I loved every mile.

I smile on the inside every time I see any Renaultsport model, and on the outside too any time I see a black 182 or a Trophy smile

I have had my 55 plate 182 with both cup packs for about 3 weeks now, been a super car besides discovering a snapped front coil today (guess it will get some Eibach Prolines this week) I get over 30mpg and is much more fun to drive than my previous two daily drivers (A3 1.8T and a 56 plate Fabia VRS) Plenty fast for daily usage, if I want to go really fast I have a 350bhp Genesis in the garage.
