The chap I bought my z4 (E85 Convertible) from managed to fit a mountain bike in the boot with the front wheel off.

You can pick up a very good one for under your budget.

I've previously owned a Mk1 MX5, a Mk2 MX5 and a MINI JCW - all have transported my bike without the need for a rack or towbar. It only really becomes an issue when you want to transport lots of bikes and passengers. Hence my wife is having a towbar fitted to her car to house one of these badboys : http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4_tab.php...

I've recently bought an FN2 Civic Type R - one of my requirements was to be able to get my MTB in the back of something quick and exciting to drive, with a budget of £7k-£9k. It fits in just fine with the rear seats down and the front wheel taken off the bike. In fact, because of the very large and low boot opening, it's even easier than my 5 door focus was.

In terms of the car, I absolutely love it. It can be a bit noisy at motorway speeds (largely due to non-standard exhaust on mine) and the ride quality is pretty poor, but I'm still absolutely smitten with it.

It can be done in an MX-5 but wouldn't recommend it.

I was just about to say , wheels and seat off and almost anything will take a mountain bike , only takes a few mins and it's locked away .

As others have said, you could pick from pretty much anything. I can fit a mountain bike in the boot of my z4 coupe. Not much room for anything else granted.

Pickup trucks are the best for bikes IMO

Easy to unload and unload/no messing about dismantling the thing or worrying about getting the interior dirty

Actually my main car criteria is that I can lock my bike inside my car. Not a fan of strap bike racks. Although I've had rigid fold down ally racks on back of varying Vw campers.

Best fun car as previously posted was in an Impreza wrx estate. Easy get two bikes in with just front wheels off.

Bare in mind when you return from a ride you need to put a filthy muddy thing in, so I just don't go with mx5 etc. but need must perhaps sometimes eh ?

Octavia vRS estate.

That's what I'm leasing (a mk3 version) and will collect it tomorrow biggrin

There are loads of mk2's available for good money now. Not as fun as an MX-5 but cheap to run and huge inside. I'm hoping the road bike will go in mine with all the wheels on and the seats lowered. at the worst, just the front wheel off.

Steve
Thanks for the suggestion Steve. However i would prefer a hatchback over an estate as i don't need that much space.
Octavia vRS Hatch then wink
That's precisely why I bought my vRS hatch. If you want a hatch and two bikes must go in, wheels on, it's a winner.

Whether the compromise in fun is worth that... it can be quite fun on a B Road blast but you can't escape it being a pretty large/heavy/FWD car. A Boxster/MX-5 it isn't.

I'm happy to have bought something 75% as fun as possible with more practicality. When it's replaced I'll probably seek something less practical/more fun (because I now cycle less and a rack would be OK for the fewer times I now use my bikes). Which compromise you make is up to you.

I had an Impreza WRX wagon. Was perfect for MTB trips; could get three bikes on the roofbars, plenty of space in the boot for kit and room in the cabin for bodies. Was also a hoot to drive and good for getting up and down muddy tracks and car parks on location.

Used to get my bike in the 944 Cab, frame on the back "Seats" and the wheels in the boot.

12k? I cart my bikes around in a transit minibus with 9 seats removed. Cost £3k, get 6 mates and their bikes in, table to sit at and an area to change one when you're a bit muddy.

Leaves you £9k to buy something fun. Sometimes better to have something that excells at what you want rather than do 2 things mediocre.

Old T5 estate and £11,600 change...

That's what I did... bike straight in wheels and all and really, who cares if the interior gets dirty.

I've changed my mind about having the bike inside the car as using a bike rack opens up more options. So what car would you recommend for a 12 mile commute each way and an hours drive for mountain biking once a week I don't carry passengers so 2 seats is ok. I don't want anything bigger than a 3 series but a hatchback makes more sense than a saloon. I guess it's between a hatchback of some sort or a sports car.
Much appreciated

EDIT: also I'd like to add the hours mountain bike drive will mainly be motorway with some a road.

Audi TT, Nissan 350Z? The right kind of rack and there aren't many cars you can't use, just get a Saris and be done: http://www.carbicyclerack.co.uk
