I'm looking for a car which can do my commute of 12 miles each way, carry my mountain bike (preferably on a tow bar rack or inside the car) and be fun. what are my options? under £12k
Thanks

You can fit two MTBs in a Focus ST, if you take the wheels off. smile

I've just bought a cheapie ST170 as a second car for the same reason.

I could fit 2 bikes in the back my old S13 200sx. Quite a practical car because of the hatch boot but probably not what the OP is looking for.

Plenty of people strap bikes to the roll-bar on Caterhams. smile

Choose a car that appeals to you, then figure a way of transporting the bike using it.

You could anything from a Catherham 7 to a 911, with hot hatches and sporting saloons thrown into the mix too.

What other factors are a consideration in your choice? - ie number of seats, hard top, soft top, every day practicality etc.

The boxster would struggle with a tow bar but there may be roof transportation systems available, as Porsche sell their own brand if bikes as well as cars.

I suspect any car can have a tow bar fitted if you're willing to pay for custom fabrication. Many aren't type approved for towing but that needn't stop you from fitting a tow bar to carry a bike rack. Alternatively, many more specialist cars have custom bike racks available for them.

I had an E46 3-Series estate that was a decent bike hauler. Could carry them inside lying flat, or upright if you took the front wheel off and lowered the seat post, plus had roof rails so attaching a roof mounted carrier was a 5mins job.

As a cyclist and sports car owner - anything.

Really, just about anything will work.

I've had bikes on, and n (yes, IN), my MX5-s and MR2.

If you want a hatchback, fine, but from experience, don't compromise your choice of car for the times you want to hang a bike off it.

Heading into trailhead car park with roof down and bike in passenger seat is great fun too.

Octavia vRS estate.

That's what I'm leasing (a mk3 version) and will collect it tomorrow biggrin

There are loads of mk2's available for good money now. Not as fun as an MX-5 but cheap to run and huge inside. I'm hoping the road bike will go in mine with all the wheels on and the seats lowered. at the worst, just the front wheel off.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve. However i would prefer a hatchback over an estate as i don't need that much space.
