MX-5 prices announced!

ND MX-5 starts at £18,495, configurator is live on Monday...

Good things come to those who wait, apparently. Well we've all done plenty of waiting for the Mazda MX-5, so let's hope it's good...

Ahead of a UK debut at the Festival of Speed, prices have been confirmed for the entire range. It begins at £18,495 for the 1.5-litre, 131hp SE with the range topped by the 160hp 2.0-litre Sport Nav at £23,295.

To the details. There are five spec levels for the MX-5: SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav, with the 2.0-litre not available as an SE. The two Nav options cost £600 over the respective SE-L and Sport models and include, would you guess it, Mazda's integrated sat-nav with European maps.

For the 1.5, the SE-L carries a £750 premium over the SE (so £19,245) and Sport is £2,600 more than an SE-L at £21,845. That £600 Nav upgrade makes the most expensive 1.5-litre MX-5 £22,445.

The 2.0-litre cars - and they're the ones we're interested in, right? - cost from £20,095 for the SE-L, with the same £2,600 jump to the Sport, making a 2.0-litre Sport £22,695.

So what separates them? You'll need a 2.0-litre car for a limited-slip diff, with both SE-L and Sport featuring one. The 2.0 Sport also gets upgraded suspension with Bilstein dampers and a different wheel design. On all Sport models, equipment such as like heated seats, keyless entry and a Bose stereo are added over the SE-L. That 1.5 SE may appeal with its low entry price but it does without DAB, Bluetooth, cruise control and Mazda's MZD infotainment. Back-to-basics thrills perhaps?

MX-5s can be ordered now, with a configurator live on Mazda's website from Monday. Can we drive one soon? Please?

Seems attractively priced, but I would have expected a bit more than 160bhp from the 2l. Room for a faster one further down the line, maybe?

Definitely looks like value.

I'd have a 2.0i Sport if i was in the market for something like this.

I'll have the bottom of the range if it does not have that awful tablet in the dash.

I think the people who want a really fast one is limited, and people like BBR will cater for them.

I thought I saw somewhere they'd been moved back to next year... when are they due in the showrooms?

We're giving very serious consideration to this. Only thing we're struggling to decide on is whether we want the 2.0 given that a lot of my driving is round the M25, M4 and M40.

Thoughts?

Most, if not all, of the reviews have pointed to the 1.5 being the better option than the 2.0 which is a bit lazy. Hopefully an LSD is on the options list for the 1.5s.

The back looks like a really sad robot with red eyes and tears cry

Shame they've gone for the Sat Nav a-la-Mercedes.

Pricing looks good though.

Erm, don't think so. Everyone has raved far more about the 1500...

I can't help but thinking it looks like a Mk2 or Mk3 that someone has not particularly brilliantly cosmetically modified.

The sad robot comment made me chuckle too.

It'll be interesting to see if Fiat do a better job.

Saw one of these close up at a "What Car" preview last October. Used to own one in 1990. Looks very nice but agree with the comment about that tablet thing in the dash! Told the Mazda reps at the preview if should be fold away or an optional extra. Also said the one I had in 1990 was too slow, and I'd only look at one now if it had 0-60 times at about 7 seconds or less - dont think that data has been published yet?

I don't think it needs to be really powerful, but 200bhp would get me interested.

2.0 SE-L seems to be the one to have. Pity you can’t have the Sport’s Bilstein dampers without all the other heavy and useless fripperies.

It should weigh around 1050kg I believe, maybe a little more for the 2.0l. I expect 160hp will be plenty at this weight! With plenty of tuning potential for anybody who wants a little more.

I've complained over the GT86s lack of power before (I'd supercharge one if I bought it) but no complaints here with regards to the MX-5! (Although I probably would still supercharge it hehe)

fun fact, Mazda in Poland has asked the owners club to choose a name for the top of the range model.
we've had a competition and people submitted around 150 names. the winner was SkyFreedom, aptly following Mazda's nomenclature

Ah, someone else who had an MX-5 in 1990! I actually placed an order in '89 based on reviews of the Miata. It was a nice car, but disappointingly slow. Not really the 'sports car' I was hoping for.
I've never really understood why Mazda haven't included a range topper with close to 200 bhp. Basically, they should have made the car that companies like BBR make. I can only assume it's because in Japan and USA people prefer to modify the car.
As for the giant tablet screen in the dashboard, this looks like it's going to be the future. Cars integrating with smartphones, and apps for satnav, in car entertainment, etc.

That was my understanding too - the 1.5 is supposed to be more in keeping with the spirit of the NA isn't it?

I look forward to buying one of these in 10 years on the cheap. (And there you have Mazda's biggest problem!)

I would still wager a guess that the 2.0 litre will be the one that sells more, it was on the NC model.

Whilst the 1.5 might be the purists choice, it might be just a little slow in the real world grand prix against all those hatchback TDI's.

Will be interested to have a look at one though.
