RE: MX-5 prices announced!
Discussion
I really like the looks of this version ( it's going to make my Mk 3.5 look dated as soon as they are on the road ) and the weight loss is something to be commended. However it's a shame that Mazda could not stretch to making a 1.5 and 1.8 3 pot engine with a lot of character and which would have been lighter still.
They are not the worlds biggest manufacturer though, so they have to cut their cloth etc. That a car that is sporty can come out in 2015 also with 16 inch wheels is to be highly applauded. They look good too.
BBR etc will be licking their lips. Madza have given the tuning companies an opportunity for people wanting the car but with some more poke. It's quite old fashioned is some respects, I like it.

Signed up to pre-order and happy with the prices which have come out today - only question is whether it is possible to pick and choose a few of the options (eg: LSD, trick suspension) without getting all the safety nonsense (eg: blind spot system?!). Guess we will find out on the configurator on Monday!

Saw one of these close up at a "What Car" preview last October. Used to own one in 1990. Looks very nice but agree with the comment about that tablet thing in the dash! Told the Mazda reps at the preview if should be fold away or an optional extra. Also said the one I had in 1990 was too slow, and I'd only look at one now if it had 0-60 times at about 7 seconds or less - dont think that data has been published yet?
Ah, someone else who had an MX-5 in 1990! I actually placed an order in '89 based on reviews of the Miata. It was a nice car, but disappointingly slow. Not really the 'sports car' I was hoping for. I've never really understood why Mazda haven't included a range topper with close to 200 bhp. Basically, they should have made the car that companies like BBR make. I can only assume it's because in Japan and USA people prefer to modify the car.
Very interesting, I would serisouly consider one of these in the future, I miss the top down driving. I thought the 2.0l was meant to have more power. 160BHP is the same as the old MK3 2.0l, but then the new car is lighter
I've complained over the GT86s lack of power before (I'd supercharge one if I bought it) but no complaints here with regards to the MX-5! (Although I probably would still supercharge it )You've complained about the GT86 having a lack of power with 156BHP/ton, but you have no complains about power with the new MX5 which will be about 152BHP/ton?
(Funnily enough, I've been having naughty thoughts about an SC upgrade as well. Perhaps an option in a couple of years).

Too slow, not enough power comments already?
It should weigh around 1050kg I believe, maybe a little more for the 2.0l. I expect 160hp will be plenty at this weight! With plenty of tuning potential for anybody who wants a little more.I've complained over the GT86s lack of power before (I'd supercharge one if I bought it) but no complaints here with regards to the MX-5! And a GT86 is overpriced at £22.5k, but an MX-5 is fairly priced at £22.6k? (ETA: OK, that's the 'from' price on the Toyota and the 'to' price on the Mazda.)StottyEvo said:

(In relation to general comments about the GT86, not specifically on this thread.)
I think PH is very much about the 'in' cars, the prevailing view is so much a popularity contest. If the badge says MX-5 it's great, if it says GT86/BRZ it's overpriced and underpowered. It doesn't seem to be about the car, more the perception.
And feel free to look at my profile garage.

I'm little bit surprised that i love this car. Have to go and test drive it.

Speed Matters though, right?
Yes. Most cars today are too grippy and therefore too fast to have fun.A Morris Minor on pram wheels is a hoot to drive because you're on the limit going round a bend at 30 which a VW/Aldi/BMW can navigate with aplomb at 50 - probably not even notice the bend at 30. I'll wager the Moggy driver has more fun though and won't get close to licence losing speeds on NSL.

Getting a bit picky, they both use a 2.0l lump so they'll produce ~150lbs. The GT86 will produce power higher up the rev range and the MX-5 will have a wider spread of power. I expect it'll make it a lot keener of out bends in the mid-range.

Its all about expectations. The GT86 is in a league above for weight and size, but not a league above for performance.

And perhaps more to the point 90% of new MX5 buyers won't have handling or performance anywhere near the top of their priorities - MX5s certainly drive very well but that's not why most people buy them, especially new, whereas it's pretty much the only reason to buy a GT86.
