I don't think they're "a league" apart - similar price point (now), near as dammit the same power to weight (as someone posted above), both driver-focused. My surprise is mainly at the eternal pasting the GT-BRZ gets on PH, opposed to the universal praise for the MX-5.
It is probably expectations, the new MX-5 is pretty much in the mould of the previous ones, a tidy handling, somewhat low powered, soft top, it has shed some weight as a nice touch. The BRZ/GT has a Subaru boxer engine, it is 'supposed' to be a bit of a bonkers performance bargain and isn't. Litchfield can fix the performance, it just costs a bit more.

No it's not. That may be your interpretation.
Do you really believe it was beyond the combined might of Subaru and Toyota to produce a 250, 300 even 500BHP motor if they wanted it?

Bonkers? The whole point as I understood it was back to driving basics, not an Impreza STi turbo nutter bd.

It is to extent, even though it weighs a bit more than a classic Impreza, but most seemed to expect Subaru power too. Personally I think that if you want a single car that gives you some practicality and fun it could be a good choice.

The MX-5 is the latest version of a well liked formula, they have stayed away from turbos and lowered the weight, basically delivered more of what the car is all about.

Well, the configurator is now live on Mazda's site and..

... apart from white, every single "colour" (read: shade of grey) is a £540 "option" - or you can have the red for £660.

WTF! Suddenly those prices don't look that great.

And *still* no performance figures anywhere to be seen...

I will tell you this proverb "Ten people, ten colours" but also if they could do it then why don't they? Hello from Japan!

Looks like the other motor manufacturers, by not making an alternative, have left one over the plate and Mazda have stepped up and smashed it right out of the park...

These are going to sell like hot cakes.

Base model - solid white no options for me

Why buy new when you can get a mk1 for £1000?!!!
I think the Mk1 is far prettier and is definitely a classic however as an everyday car they aren't a patch on the later cars.

And £1k Mk1's will probably be smokey, leaky roof and have rotten sills etc a good Mk1 is rarely found below £2500

I do still own a Mk1 (I have for 15 years, supercharged of course) but it's kept as a second car and I don't see that ever changing.

A rather uninspiring range of colours available: two whites, two greys, black, drab blue. The red looks ok though. When are Fiat/Abarth/Alfa announcing their version of this?

ETA: just spotted a comedy configurator combination - "vehicles with sport tan leather must also be fitted with navigation [...] and is not removable". WTF is that all about.

This is the message when you get to options on a base spec 1.5...

Your current grade choice does not have any accessories or option packs available.

Poor...

And having just re-read the CAR magazine drive story, their 1.5 had an LSD, something that is impossible to spec for UK buyers. On the presumption that all the journos had 1.5s with LSD, the glowing reviews are for a car we simply can't buy.
