No, that's not right.
I don't have the VW lease paperwork in front of me, but I can post the clauses when I'm at home.

Trust me, it is odd (and looks like a penalty and/or an unfair term) but that is the effect. Not only that, they prorate the allowable mileage based on the expired term. They even go as far as excluding all warranties of fitness for purpose, but only when the customer deals as a business.

Purely out of interest - and not in any way intending to suggest that you didn't make the best decision; but what other options did you consider in that brief moment? I find it interesting, that to me, if I wanted to separate someone from their keys (say in some hypothetical road rage situation) I'd instinctively take them and throw them as far as I could - yet in the situation you describe I don't think that throwing my own keys would even cross my mind...

Taking a step back to think of hypothetical situations, there might be a few where throwing your own keys over a wall/onto a roof or [not really] in front of an HGV (hoping for a very emotionally thick-skinned driver) might not be the worst idea?
I suspect the decision I made was because they were on my in-laws driveway and wanted them to leave, as at any time someone from my family could have been embroiled in this incident.

Not everybody is the same in mind set? You make a judgement call, when things like this happen then afterwards you move on with your life.

Some choices in life workout others do not, however good or bad you still have to move on.

We have all made them in our life, I have anyway.

Wonder how many st insurance companies would refuse a payout on the grounds that you essentially handed them the keys under threat of violence.
None of them. Not a single one.
I could almost guarantee the one starting with End and ending with Santa Claus mode of transport would make things very uncomfortable.

Just out of interest what exactly did the insurance company say to justify non payment?

The OP was right to give in without a fuss.

This was never going to be a situation where you give them a slap and stand over then with your foot on their chest whilst phoning the authorities.

I caught 3 blokes breaking into my van in SE London while I was buying lunch, I walked round the corner and I had 3 options a) pull some Kung-Fu st on them and subsequently get sent to prison, b) make a fuss and wind up in hospital or worse, or c) get in the van and drive off.

No man points lost here - the opposite for being sensible.

OP this is horrible.

Would a car tracker be any use in this situation? I hear they can be useful in recovering the car - but it is a question of if you would really want it back - not rather get paid out?

Ha anyone had any stories of successfully recovering a car via tracker?

Unlucky OP, but you made the right choice of letting them have it. In the UK, with no real options for defending yourself against this sort of crime, all you can do is give it over, or risk getting killed for the sake of a physical object which is insured anyway.

I suspect losing a car is ultimately less of a problem than knowing the ruthless, rat-eating bds that stole it are still out there, and capable of unknown nastiness in order to get the cars they want.

Sorry to hear this OP. Hope the fkers get what's coming to them, either a lengthy custodial sentence or choose the wrong target.

The thing with a tracker is it may help catch the gangs and put them behind bars hopefully reducing the amount of such offences. It's a bigger picture than just helping an individual who's car has been nicked.

refused the payout, due to a clause about not being covered when selling the car, to someone who dont intend on paying for it, cant remember the exact line as was two years ago now.
