That's an interesting observation.

I think its's disappointing that you can't take this thread at face value.

Give AVS a call on Monday and ask for John, he'll confirm my stupidity!

There are other things we can confirm from this thread, no need to call anyone.

I drive a lot of hire cars, if the does have a rev counter easiest way is to

Check fuel flap
Check key
Check fuel filler size
Sniff cap
Check for glow plugs
Whack reg into euro car parts
If really stuck lift bonnet

Usually you can just tell by the sound mind

'There was a picture of a tiger or lion on the wheel?'......Obviously a classic Mk2 Jaguar then. Was it manual or auto ? Ok then, it doesn't really matter !

I haven't tried this for myself as I can usually tell if cars are diesel or petrol by the noise they make, but I have heard that petrol caps are tighter than diesels so the smaller petrol nozzles will fit but diesel nozzles will not.

Some of the stbox hire cars are starting to get 3cyl engines in them so even the petrols have the clatter of a diesel. Can't always rely on noise to give it away so just try the petrol nozzle first.

Loan Cars :-

This is something that happened to me most days:-

Customer drops off car for Service [or more likely Warranty Work in the case of the manufacturer I worked for at the time]
I give the customer the keys to the loan car.

5 mins later, customer runs back in to me.

Customer - "It's got no fuel"

Me - "You can get fuel at the BP station down the road, sir"

Customer - "But there's fuel in my car that I've left for Service"

I never understood the logic of that one.

Quite a lot.

The last two BMW dealers I had a loan car from handed the keys over with while on the fuel light.

It really adds up. A Subaru dealer I used to use would give you the car full then fill it up and charge you for every penny used when you got back even when I only used £3 one time. I used to think they were a bit tight.

Then I was working for a large Merc dealer. 5 loan cars out 6 days a week. Never charged anyone for fuel but even if we only put in enough to get the fuel lights off it was still racking up about £200 a week so over £10k a year!

Indeed. I had a loan car from BMW with the oil light on and very little fuel.

Most garages normally say 'it's got so much in just bring it back with the same level'

Also if I didn't recognise the car I was bring handed (will never happen btw) , I would be saying, wtf is that? when the keys were being handed over.

Definitely a wind up though this. A very poor one mind.

A work colleague has one of those sporty looking Citroen DS3 things in bright yellow, and recently we have been doing a lot of journeys in it to visit various sites. Usually 250+ miles per day round trip.

I was in it one day when he filled it up with fuel and was genuinely surprised that it was diesel. I had no idea.

It didn't sound like a diesel in the slightest and seemed to rev very freely in quite a petrol like way.

I even looked at the Rev counter in my confusion and still wasn't convinced set it redlined at 6000rpm which could possibly have been a petrol redline.

I honestly think I would have out petrol in it by accident if it didn't say Disel on the fuel cap.

One whose business model doesn't sustain handing loan cars with full tanks to customers, then getting them back with empty tanks, thereby giving an effective ~£70 discount on the bill.

Oh, and as far as the "Which fuel?" question goes, just take the cap off and look to see if it has a restrictor for the much smaller diameter nozzle on the petrol pump. If it does, you can't get a diesel nozzle in, so it must be petrol. If it doesn't, and you can get a diesel nozzle in, it must be diesel.
