So I was walking back from work and noticed a ford focus (last of the first generation) across from my house. Not unusual, there's a restaurant there and everyone parks on the street.

However what really caught my eye was the shiny marks all through the tread of the tyre.

Yes you've guessed it, this person has decided that even though we've seen temperatures of 19 degrees at least twice this month they still needed their studded winter tyres on.

I suppose what truly stuns me is that they knew they needed winter tyres and decided to go the extra mile and choose studs, to then leave them on when it was absolutely not appropriate just astounds me.

What's it like driving on studs when the road is bone dry, I can't imagine it's much fun.

Driving on studs in this weather? One for the "knob" thread, methinks!

to be honest i don't know where you would go to buy studded tyres for a ford focus, i doubt many tyre fitters would be willing to put a set on what is a very ordinary road car.
a focus with roll cage and bucket seats ready to go rallying maybe, but one with child seats and empty crisp wrappers, ready to go to lidl, not so much.

You stud a normal Winter or M&S tyre.

I know quite a few seasonaires who are just coming back from the Alps, and judging by the number of unexpected pregnancies, lost phones, lost passports and general naivety and stupidity amongst many of them, I wouldn't be surprised if someone had just left the Alps after a season and driven home on studded tyres smile

Coming soon to a forum near you: "why are my tyres so noisy?"

I didn't know they were illegal, that makes it all the more perplexing.

I'd imagine it's an order online and get your relaxed garage to fit them. I've heard of others having them fitted and up here in the Highlands there's no shortage of laissez faire garages who would happily do it.

As my dad said, they're probably driving around complaining about the handling.

I thought they were illegal on roads that aren't covered in ice?
