Seems excessive?
Not when you consider in those 3 years, it's done 70,000 miles and the fun way to work is all fun and twisty.

I've just traded my e39 530i sport in with 180k on the clock. Its not had much in the last 5 years, a few tyres, brakes, coolant system overhaul and lots of petrol. Not bad for 5 years

I got a E46 320d bought with 58k has 160k, still on original clutch

Changed suspension, bushes, discs and pads, tires, HPFP, original turbo, no oil leaks and doesn't use oil. Pretty strong engine, I have a feeling that the engine should be good for another 100k easy, turbo not sure.

Yes I have spent a bit on it but cheaper than buying a new car and to buy used like mine I will keep mine at least I know the state of it. Only thing is that it is getting old and there is moss on rubber seals, also feels a bit date and interior is a little bit worn but can't fault it. It is nice to drive a nice new car but there is something nice about racking up the miles.

1995 405 TD Estate bought in 2012 with 213K - now 232K (seen 222222 - now trying to get to 234567!)

In that time it's had 1/2l of oil cos it leaks a bit (not changed), 2 glowplugs, 2 front tyres, 3 MOTs (the last of which led to a bit of welding and an O-Ring for the diesel pump), rear brake shoes, 2 wipers, 2 headlight bulbs and - erm - oh yeah, me taking the fan fuses out because the fan relays are corroded (I live in the North, who needs a fan!?) and the P/S cooler was also removed as it was 'holy' (again, who needs one)

It's a heap but mechanically it's still a working heap - I've sort of grown to love it

p.s. guy who looks after it says he's 99% sure it's on it's original clutch - no evidence it's even been changed (tho the cable has been at some point)

p.s. last time I was over he had a 333,333 mile 2.0 TDCi Mondeo and a 400,000+ mile 406 in the shop - so mine is barely warmed-up ;0

I've just scrapped my 2001 Astra 1.7CDTi Eco. I bought it with 89k on the clock seven years ago and head gasket went with 249,683 miles on it (was gutted it didn't make the 250k). It was regularly serviced every 20k miles and had new timing belts at 100k & 200k respectively. Other than servicing, tyres, wiper blades & bulbs it had to have:

Rear springs
Exhaust middle & back box sections
Wheel bearings
Windscreen wiper motor
Alternator
Battery
CV joint boots

Think that is everything. Car never left me stranded anywhere.

Another Volvo owner here - a 2001 S60 D5. Had it 4 years, now on 176,000. I have detailed most repairs in the garage section on my profile, for my own curiosity more than anything!

What is regarded as a high mileage on a fairly new car can actually be regarded as a low mileage on many older cars. I have a Jaguar XJ40. Very few of them have done much less than 120,000 miles - I'd regard one with less than 100,000 as a low mileage car. An XJ40 would have to have done well over 150,000 miles to be considered in any way 'high mileage'. I'm sure this will be true for most other cars of their age.

There have been a few posters on xj40.com with cars which have done more than 300,000 miles - though most of the higher mileage cars on there have done less than that, mostly two hundred and something thousand miles. The highest I have seen was on the site was probably a French Daimler with 675,000 km on the clock. It was well maintained and still looked smart. Quite a bit of road rash on the front though.

I bought an Audi A3 for £1800 with 130,000 on it. Was a lovely car to drive. Then started overheating as the cylinder heads had become porous. Payed £1500 to get it fixed then it did the same again 2 weeks later. In the end I went to we buy any car and they didn't even notice the engine problems!!!!

However they did tell me it had be clocked at least twice and had done at least 200,000 miles :/
I'll be doing an HPI check on all my next cars, especially high mileage ones!

I always buy higher mileage cars now. The ones i have had (all 4 been fiestas) have been well looked after and drive like half the miles. What i tend to find is the higher the mileages the more parts which have been replaced. Things like clutches, timing belts and other major expensive jobs. My current one is the highest mileage i've bought (107k) but i have a full service history and the car is mint you would not know it had covered that amount of miles. I bought it for half the price the same car with half the mileage sells for. No brainer in my opinion.

Not really high mileage, but my track car has about 177,000 on it at the moment. You wouldn't believe it smile

My daily E46 328i is catching it, currently 156k and that's not showing the faintest signs of giving up yet either. Absolutely no major parts required on either car, only normal servicing, brakes, tyres and preventative cooling system work. Both original clutches and gearboxes.

My Volvo 850 is about to be sent to the big carpark in the sky, having got to about* 200K and blown its head gasket. Despite the wonky gasket it still keeps running with a sump full of mayo and an empty cooling system. Only a dead battery and the near-guaranteed failing of the now-due MOT keeps it from going any further.

For an £800 shed purchased 5 years ago, with the only "repair" whilst in my custody being a brake caliber and a shock top mount, I'd sat that was pretty good. If scrap values hadn't tanked and instead stayed around 2011 prices, I'd have seen £200 back and be laughing even more!

Not high mileage yet, but I crack trough around 35-40k a year so it'll be son!

Accord 2.4i (2008). Bought on 52k 18 months ago, now just ticked past 100k. Only oil and filters and 2 tear drop links so far, plus tyres and I stuck discs and pads all around as I do them myself and it's cheap, they weren't strictly needed.

I've taken two Octavia from 80's to 200k, had a 150k mile e60 525i and a 80k Mazda 6. The 5 series woes woefully unreliable and he Mazda dropped its dpf.
How many mpg is that Accord doing? Big mileage for a petrol.....

You often hear people saying "I got rid of it because it would cost more to repair than it's worth". That's the entirely wrong way to think about it. The real question is "How much would it cost for me to buy a car in the same mechanical state".
Have to agree mate, if you love a car you'd want to keep it going and you have to weigh up whether buying a different car would even prove cheaper.

I bought my Saab 9-3 for £1,200 but to be 100% happy I've had a full service done, steering rack replaced, bit of rust removed and it'll have a second cam belt replacement done tomorrow. Compared to some cars on here it's fairly young with 139k on the clock but I'd love to see it hit 200k!

I think the car is worth spending a bit of cash on and keeping alive because it's still a great car, shame so many people give up on cars.

Renault Twingo 2008 1.2 Turbo - got it with 17k on the clock. Now on 114k. Okay not huge, but for a small petrol turbo that most people would assume would die before 100k...

What I consider to be wear and tear...

2 x discs and pads
1 x front springs
1 x cambelt
1 x spark plugs (they are iridium things, meant to be good for 80k or something)
1 x drop link
5 x 4 tyres all round (every time) (BF Goodrich, Goodyear, Avon, Yoko's, back to Avon as they were the best so far)

Plus it has been serviced pretty much in line with the manufacturers schedule.

Failures

1 x ABS Unit
1 x Coil Pack
1 x Wheel (nasty pothole in the shadows)

It's also had 1 puncture repaired and one chip in the windscreen repaired.

Servicing and MoT's etc probably £700 or something. The ABS unit was around £800 as it was a main dealer job unfortunately. Coil pack wasn't much as Dad fixed that. Wheel was £60... Tyres have been around £1200.

2002 Audi S3 180k still on Original turbo and transmission/gearbox. Only problems have been hoses degrading over time. Still drives great and it's been mapped for a good few years
