People are scared of older big engined cars, hence the prices, thankfully.

The naysayers will tell you it'll blow up before you get it back home and that it costs eleventy squillion pounds to replace the interior light bulb.

You are scared too, that's why you haven't got one.

645's are great engines, do your due diligence and go get one smile
knowing what things to look out for (spec wise?) etc would be good!
Condition over spec at this price level.

It's gonna be high miles so it might need bushes etc but they're cheap. The engine and tranny are your main concern, check for smooth shifts and no shunting from cold, after a run let the engine hot idle for 5 minutes then blip the throttle and check for smoke (might only be split CCV's, £30 repair, or might not smile)

Well that's the thing-If I have to pay more for something I'm likely to be more happy with in the long term then I'm fine with that.

Think they're pretty solid aside from the coolant pipe issue (which is hidden in the V, so quite a laborious part to replace).

Not sure I could live with a '45 with the '50 existing. Test drove a 650i not long ago while I had my 330 but it didn't really feel that fast or very nice inside. Sounded amazing, though.

I've a 650i Convertible....it's utterly fabulous in every way. Fast, good noise (but not upsetting on a long journey) and it's soooooo comfortable.

Took it to Italy 3 years ago and it was great - top down in the warm Lake Garda night air, and mad fast if you wanted a Vin Diesel moment

Its a keeper for me. It might be worth £10k but i get £50k of smiles from it.

Servicing is sensible - the M6 is mental with the discs etc but the 650 is the everyman choice

I did just under 1k miles to Paris and back last weekend in my 650i ( have to put the "I" because a bmw 650 is a bike) and it was fantastic, it also returned 38mpg.
It's a proper Grand Tourer.
It's also ever so slightly boring.

Assuming sausage fingers and the 3 should be a 2?

I think these are more reliable and cheaper to run than most people think, the 650i at least.

Reliability worries aside the appeal of the 6 series is limited because so many people consider it extremely ugly. Most in the market for a large coupe do care to some extent what it looks like, and David Bangle's 6 series design is an offput for many. Shame really because the M6 has a lovely engine...

No :-)
I got 49mpg from Southampton to Cheshire once but I did every trick in the book and stuck to about 50mph. Never again.
Also worth noting is on non run flats it's 70db at 80mph

45 and 50 share the vast majority of parts.

I bought a 645Ci convertible last Nov, 57000 miles, full main dealer history, perfect condition, less than £7K. Am going to use it for a summer continental road trip in the summer & move it on when I get back. Great car, amazing value, I get 28 mpg on my motorway commute

A lot of car for the money but £500 tax, 18 mpg... dread to think what parts and labour would cost. My guess is anyone that could afford to run one would buy something newer?
54 plate 645ci here, tax is not £500 a year.
parts are relatively cheap. i am averaging 26mpg.

its perfect for what i do.

Don't all 645's qualify for £285 tax band as they are pre March 06? The 650 was brought out to replace the 645 and it has the high tax rate as a younger car, i.e. emissions based rather than age based.

On a motorway run at 70ish it's not difficult to see 30 - 35 mpg. Around town you should expect to see an average of 19 mpg. When I bought mine I decided life was too short to worry about mpg, and fuel prices will only ever go up so enjoy a v8 while you still can.
[The difference between 45 and 25 mpg over 10,000 miles at current prices is about £900, or £75/month. If you can stomach the difference it'll definitely be more exciting than a diesel].

And the post about it being 70 dB at motorway speeds is totally dependant on what tyres you fit. I'm running Michelin Pilot Super Sports and you don't need to raise your voice to have a conversation at well into licence losing speeds. It is extremely refined which a lot of owners don't like due to the low level of induction noise. Personally I like it because you only hear the v8 when you want to hear it, the rest of the time you can cruise around with no drama.

Mate of mine had 1 from new & sold it last summer appx 80k on a 55 plate.

I hate BMW`s but I loved this, sounded great, looked good with roof down, didnt seem too bad on fuel & from what he said wasnt an expensive car to service.

Only other thing I can bring to the party is that there is some pipe that goes from front to back of the engine, through the vee, & is prone to fail & is apparently quite costly to sort.

It used to be expensive as it required a full engine strip down to get into the vee but now it's possible to get an expanding pipe which cuts out a lot of labour time. There are other good threads on here with all these questions answered if people used the search function.
