I'm sorry to say this however this is absolute codswallop I'm afraid. No doubt you will retort however it just is. From a 550i owner.
I will throw in my twopenny worth.

Something is wildly wrong with the on board computer if it's showing 49MPG on a journey.

I'm calling custard that a 645 will get anywhere near that.

That's the spirit! party
yup, sod them!
Definitely this! My mate has a 630, can never get my head round how such a large car can be so cramped, like a Tardis in reverse! I would suggest that the rear seats are a no-no for all but smallish children, the headroom is very limited, practically zero vis, just not a nice place to be for anything other than short journeys.

Don't think his running costs are too ruinous, he's done around 80k with no problems, although when it's been in for service/tyres etc the words 'two grand' invariably crop up in the conversation eek

What's the sound proofing like in the soft top at motorway speeds?

0-100 in 12.4 sec, for a big old barge that is pretty rapid, 650i just over a second quicker at 11.3.

Rocker cover gaskets can sweat, just as they do on E39 M5..

Vacuum pump leaks oil, the seal that goes isn't available from BMW so they'll fleece you £350 for a new pump! You can buy new seals from ebay for £7..

I have an auto 550i and it's about identical MPG wise to an old E46 330i auto, if anything the 550 gets more stick.. Averages about 22/23.

There's nothing really to be scared of, a 530d is more likely to throw big bills!

Go for the 6er.. But I'd spend a bit more for the 650i, all reports say they're more fuel efficient, and quicker.
I may suddenly have an urge to put my Impreza up for sale and go 6 shopping hehe

One step ahead of you Dan! Good thing about Impreza ownership is that it acclimatises you to horrendous fuel economy!

The onboard computer showed around 45-46, I worked it out myself at 49mpg.

By the way the N62B44 (4.4) engine is thirster than the N62B48 (4.8).

38mpg is the norm on motorway runs for me, soon get it into teens around town or pushing on. But at about 65-70 on the motorway its doing about 1800 revs and making about 70-80bhp, plus its relatively light and more importantly quite slippery.

38mpg is the norm on a motorway run for this 4.4/4.8 litre V8?

How the hell can i custard test this?

Will this help?

Just been outside and taken a pic of the computer. This is after my normal country roads driving to work and back this week.

If you want to pay for the hotel and fuel I will take you to Chantilly near paris this bank holiday. My girlfriend is working and very understanding. (but be warned I'm the driver so that makes me the giver)

Yes yes we can all get 30+ on an easy run, no biggie. Come back with a 30 odd mile run showing 49mpg please.

I think the reason they are relatively cheap is that they flogged a lot of new ones to the fleets and on cheap PCP/Lease deals so there are simply too many around compared to the private demand for used large engined coupes.
Maybe the new shape.

The old one is the one being discussed on this thread; they were around a loooong time before the era of super cheap leases (I was quoted £800pcm back in 2005 for a 630 cab).

Reminds of of the countless threads where cars are described as able to achieve a genuine 40 mpg. Sure, drive at 50 mph on a straight flat road with no junctions...biggrin

On the mpg question my 545 is averaging 26 mpg. It's slightly lower than that on an 80 mph motorway run and slightly higher on a 20 mile free flowing a and B road run.

It feels fast enough to me and the figures put it at 13.5 seconds for a standing 1/4. An e90 330i is about 14.5.

There are faster ways to get from a to b but as an all round package combining cost and comfort etc there can't be much a lot better at covering ground with minimal effort.

Nearly got myself a 630i a month ago, the 3litre is supposed to be 80-90% as good as the v8s, but with a lighter nose is more agile...
I wanted one because I love it when car companies try REALLY hard to get their gorgeous concepts on the road as unchanged as possible...

I went for a Brera in the end...mainly because it's less common and I'm growing increasingly tired of the double kidneys....
The 6 is still genuinely a beauty though, timeless I think...

The x50i are slightly quicker than E46 M3, when rolling at least.. Still struggle off line!

That 35mpg is all very good, but why have a 4.4 V8 if you're never going to open it up?

So the engine is doing 38mph per 1000 RPM in top? That seems very high, and the 35 MPG you are showing is a far cry from the 45 you are claiming too.

It is a great car, if a little too quiet. An XK would have a better soundtrack, but these Sixers are half the price & very capable for long distance cruising. They are also more economical than the XK, so much so that it could be a daily driver if you wanted it to be.

My 2 previous owner 58000 mile fBMWsh 645Ci 'vert will be available soon....
