Saxo banana'd by lamppost......
Discussion
Quite fast I would think - I know that road, and if you're misbehaving it would be a place to build up quite a bit of speed.
Problem is he hit the lamp-post, they're not very bendy, and much like hitting a tree a crash structure can only take so much. Even a roll cage probably wouldn't have helped there.

Heck of an impact. I recovered a vehicle that hit a tree sideways on, on a NSL country lane hard enough that the front touched the back. The driver although injured, survived despite being ejected from the car on impact - he's had his licence for two weeks. Watching the car cut apart to get it off of the tree really made me think.
A friend many years ago did very similar in a charade Gti, he wanted me to get in the car with him but his earlier driving hadn't impressed and I got in the back of a friends car. 15minutes later we approached a similar scene to the photos. I certainly wouldn't have been here to type this today if I had listened to him.
Stupid me though a year later I got in his new car and ended up in a river.

Before someone else says it... That's what happens when you fit mismatched budget tyres.
Not sure if budget is an issue, but they are certainly mismatched on both, front and rear axis.front
rear
Add an expectation that the car would handle as any car with matching tyres on each axle, then you won't need to drive like a knob to crash.

I think it's more what happens if you crash into a lamppost in a tinny Saxo.XC90_pole_test
And that's just 18mph!!!
(although with an "immovable" pole, rather than a lamp post (but because the impact point is so close to the base of the post, a real lamp post is pretty immovable too....)

Sadly they didn't do the pole test back then AFAIK, although the frontal test gives a damn good clue about why this lad was hurt so badly....

Lamp-posts are designed to snap. Tree wouldn't budge but it's wider so may have spread the impact more, but the deceleration would be faster so more likely to cause death. If he hadn't hit the lamp-post or a tree, he could have been skewered by the wooden fence.
I vividly remember seeing a Saxo having been rear-ended on the M40 - it was basically just folded over on itself. Both front seat occupants died.
