Sandero Renaultsport coming!

YouTube teaser previews a fast version of Britain's cheapest car. Bring it on!

'There's something new coming up. Get ready!' At present, that's all the information available on the Sandero RS. It's the video description of Renaultsport's latest YouTube upload, which means after a fair bit of speculation it can be confirmed that a Renault Sandero Renaultsport will happen. Superb news!

Humble origins to say the least!
Humble origins to say the least!
The 'Renault' part of that name is the first point of note. The embed video title describes the car as a 'surprise for Latin America'; the Sandero is sold as a Renault in markets including Brazil and so it would appear only for those markets. Performance isn't exactly Dacia's USP in the countries where it is available either. Let's wait and see but it doesn't look good for a quick Sandero in Europe.

A mechanical spec is still to be announced at this stage too but there's little harm in speculating, right? Hopefully as a low budget hot hatch a fancy pants small turbo and dual-clutch auto can be ditched for a big old NA lump and a manual. We can but hope, right?

Anyway, the Sandero RS is something we'll have to keep tabs on given there's little released so far. Will it make a debut at Frankfurt? Or perhaps even sooner? All input welcomed now!

Watch the video here.

They must have taken a few lessons from Honda on how they launched/teased about the new Civic TypeR.

Something that's cheap, simple, fast-ish and rides well. It's not rocket science is it?

It's a bit late for an April fool's wink
I've often wondered how easily a 1*2 could be mated with a Dacia, lets hope that's what this is.
I believe it and the Logan are basically Mk2 Clio?

As above with it being past Clio architecture this is likely to be a parts bin raid of previous RS models we've already had.

I wonder if they'll get one with Sachs dampers; the 'Sandero Top Prize'?!

If this isn't a wind up it could be quite good?

Hopefully it actually has some true RS DNA, not just a few stickers and some fancy alloys.

Just build the 182 in a new shell smile

Surely with Dacia being "budget" they'll do it Cup style?
ABS? Naw, too expensive. Traction control? Too expensive.

Some more cheap one make racing would be a great development. It would allow a lot more people to participate in motor sports. Everyone has to start somewhere. Racing Dacias - why not?

Apart from ABS being a legal requirement.

Maybe a Clio 197 engine ?

Since when?
Most recent car I can think of without, off the top of my head, The Noble M600?
ASM yes, but afaik not ABS?
eta: ok according to wikipedia, in the EU since 2007, so before the M600?
and according to an old thread on here, since 2004?
I suppose there's a different rule for small volume?

I wish people wouldn't do photoshops. They just look terrible.

Although it's better than AutoExpress efforts.....

Anyway, it'll have the 1.6 from the Twingo RS or the 2.0 from the old 200.

It would be ace to have it here. I'd love a Cup spec Sandero RS.

Seeing as Dacia use all the old Renault hardware, let's assume it'll have the 2.0 16v mill from the Clio 182....

Yeah, think cars can still be produced without all the electronics but it is about volume and type approval and stuff, think it was less than 500 cars a year and you dont need it.

I'm pretty sure some core elements of the Dacia platform are engineered to be good for about 120bhp which is why it's so cheap so anyone hoping for a Clip 182 engine is going to be disappointed.

Most likely (if it happens at all in Europe) it'll be a mildly breathed-upon 1.2 tCe or at a push the 1.6 from the old Twingo RS. Anything more means huge engineering changes.

I don't think it needs huge power. It will be nice just to see a cheap, well set up, fun to drive car.

er, technically I think some core elements of the Clio were only designed for 120 wink
That's why RSes tend to just shake themselves apart.
You're lucky if an exhaust mount lasts more than 6 months.

In all seriousness, I don't see what the limiting factor is, you can always stick on bigger struts, bigger brakes, bigger wheels, bigger wishbones, bigger ARB, recycle bits from the next car up the range, make the arches a bit bigger to fit the bigger wheels? Need to modify the front wings? No problem, they're plastic, relatively cheap manufacture process.

Of course it probably will be a 120hp Twingo engined thing.
But we can dream.
