I think Dr. W@nka is pulling a fast one.

Let me know when it's on sale for 50p/litre in Sainsburys.

What an utterly meaningless article. As with any synthesised fuel, the key factor is the efficiency of the conversion process which isn't even mentioned.

Saw this over on Reddit and it's been discussed that this is nothing new at all. Tech that has been around for donkeys years and plenty of companies have tried to make it work but never succeeded because the amount of energy required to generate this "clean diesel" totally outweighs the benefits of producing it in the first place.

Of course, if Audi can really do it using solar, wind and hydro power alone then it's worth a shot.

can I point out that 'Diesel' isn't a fuel, it's an engine (which can run on lots of different fuels - the normal heavy oil being known as 'diesel fuel')

Only if all of the other electricity being generated for all of the other uses that electricity has are also being generated by those means. Generating "clean" electricity for one particular use is a bit meaningless. Ultimately these synthetic fuels all have the same problem - they make vastly less efficient use of the electricity used to generate them than simply using it in an EV.
