Doggedly stuck at 50 mph (or whatever limit) with everybody else crawling along, wondering what you can get away with and whether switching lanes and lurking behind lorries will work, and then, there is always that one car that goes steaming through 20 or 30 mph faster !

Who are these people ? do they wonder why everybody is going so slow, do they know something we dont ? do they get lots of post from the Central Ticketing Office ?

M60 a few days ago, in the long and tedious 50 mph section and a girl in a new looking Audi A1 goes through a good deal faster than anyone else, then a scratty old Zafira.

What is going on ?

I find this, not unusual to be doing an indicated 75mph commuting to work up the A9 (Dual carriageway) and get passed by a van doing 80+.

Are we the fools? confused

We were doing 52mph (GPS) 50mph (speedo) through the M54 SPECS section on saturday arvo, when a polo comes steaming up behind us at about 70mph. He's flashing his head lights and gesticulating at us. So when there is a gap in the left lane we squeeze into it, and he comes past.

We assume, he needs to get to hospital or similar emergency.

Except, when the 50mph section ends, and we all accelerate back to the usual Mway speed, he's now just doing the same 70mph he was in the roadworks section and so being overtaken by everyone? WTF? I guess he's just an idiot eh! ;-)

Same on the M3 roadworks and the M1 20+ miles of the same... 99% going 50mph +/- 2mph, a few people steaming past at 70mph+.

They are blind to the surroundings I suspect.

Presumably they are the people driving stolen cars. In the old days, they would have been stopped and nicked by the police.

But now there aren't any police, just the cameras, so they can go as fast as they like! ;-)

I thought (foolishly) that if you speed through an average speed check you'll be gifted with a fine?

I'm sure I read here that someone got fined for going through the M54 a while back.

Either way speeding through when every is doing 50 smacks of "This is the only way I can take some scalps!"

See this loads, and also quite often the same people slamming on the brakes just before the camera gantries.

I suppose there is no helping the brainless. I suspect they believe all these "police warnings" on Facebook about children being abducted in white transits, and carjacking at the local Morrisons, etc, etc, etc.

As above - i've done a GPS 52mph on the limiter for years and largely manage to sail safely past people with no issue. There's always someone who is steaming up behind. I always take the premise that they need a poo and are willing to take 3 points in lieu of stting themselves.

For the mobile works cameras i have used the tactic of switching lanes (otherwise known as lane discipline!) in combination with timing passing cameras whilst being hidden by an HGV. I've been doing it for years and there's never been a consequence.

I'm not quite sure how they work out the fines, but i've still always kept it to 70mph so was wondering if they only went after people doing silly speeds. Bear in mind most people will do 50mph by their speedo when you can be doing 58mph without a conventional speed camera flashing at you.

Always makes me laugh when people brake for averaged speed cameras - remarkably common!

I got caught out by them a few years back when they were still fairly new, a section on the M60 near Bredbury had been seventy for years, it was dropped down to 50 and covered with average speed cameras, I got a NIP for 74 in a 50 biggrin three points and sixty quid fine, another 2 mph and it would have been six points, the road was very quiet and as such there were no cars doing 50 mph to make me feel like I was doing something wrong, serves me right of course as it was well signposted.

I live in a high specs area (A13,A127,M25) and have a few mates who just ignore them all, regularly 30mph+ over the limit through them. None of them have a ticket yet, fairly certain that we are the fools but I need my license for work so stick fairly close to the number in the circle.

I just assumed they were idiots. Especially the ones who brake for each camera then go steaming off again.

Or maybe they just have a higher risk threshold then everyone else and are prepared to risk the fine based on lack of previous fines.

Or they have cloned plates.
Or a stolen car.
Or don't give a st.

To be fair you get a lot of people who sit at bang on or below an indicated 50,
I set my cruise at 57 in my van which does sometimes appear to be a a hell of a lot faster when everybody else is around 10mph less.

Could be people with foreign licences. We get guys coming over from our European offices and they just ignore cameras.

Even the fixed ones didn't used to be able to cope with lane changing but they do now, and the "works" ones often didn't work at all.

Hoping there's always going to be a convenient HGV is taking a bit of a chance!

The ones on the M3 roadworks seem to be rather unsportingly (for a motorcyclist) set to point at the backs of vehicles, I'm sure they were front facing last time they were doing roadworks along there.

People obeying the speed limit? Whatever next!?!

But the speed limit is 50, not an indicated 50?

Admittedly at 57 I am flickering between 53/4 on GPS.
I didn't say it was a problem that people sat at that speed, its a limit not a target after all.
But don't look down on others in a belief that you are in the right because your speedo says 50.
