I quite fancy a Citroen C6 this time around, but my past experience with french car has been terrible.

Should I avoid them?

which engine i should go for? 2.7 V6 HDI?

what the running cost are like on those?

and living with it?

I lusted Citroen SM as kid. The C6 is modern version of SM, would rather have SM but prices are too much for one.

Think of it as a big C5/407/508, and you aren't a million miles off.

Some bits are expensive and you'll need to wait for them to come from France.
They eat front balljoints.

But, apart from that, no real problems.

Engine-wise...
2.2HDi - four-pot + manual - some down-speccing.
2.7HDi - most common.
3.0HDi - best, but only about 50 sold in UK...

There's a thread in the frenchie section where a pher details his experiences with owning a C6. Well worth a read and while they are not dirt cheap to run by some margin, they are not the money pit that some would have you believe.

Superb cars in my opinion and has future classic written all over it. If only they did a petrol version.

That makes sense, I don't ever remember seeing a 3.0 or v6 for sale. Great looking machines.

The 2.7 is a V6

Indeed. 2.2 is the only non-v6.

I forgot to mention the 3.0 v6 petrol... Again, not exactly common...

2.7's the same lump used in the Disco 3 and various Jags.
3.0's the Disco 4 lump and, again, Jags. Much less thirsty, much lower CO2. Look for a pre-06 2.7 if you can, because it'll be £200+/year lower tax...

Also keepin mind they are a huge/long car; there was a C6-love-in thread on here a few months ago and someone posted a picture of theirs in a standard parking bay and it was hanging out by a good foot or two.

I had one as a demo for a short period when I was working for Citroen.

They are very nice to drive, smooth and enjoyable. But they are HUGE. I took mine to the Gym and struggled to park. A quick nip into Tescos meant parking far away and going back as far as I could to feel safe.

But if you park in a private carpark then that's one less thing to worry about.

C6 - 4,907mm
Mondeo MkIV - 4,869mm
Mondeo MkIII - 4,844mm
Jag XF - 4,961mm

So a C6 is 38mm longer than a current Mondildo, and 54mm shorter than an XF. Big? Yes. Not _THAT_ big, though... 18mm narrower than an XF, too.

So yea, not that big, but still sizeable if tight parking is a concern for the OP.

If that's really up to the front of the bay, then that bay looks like 4.5m or so long.

A Focus estate is longer than that.

We've had ours about 2 years and 50K miles. In a useful sense, they're parts-bin cars. If you're mechanical, they're easy to stay on top of at home, and parts are available and relatively cheap. If not, there are enough Citroen independent specialist garages around the country that you shouldn't be troubled for affordable expertise. Dealerships are expensive and inflexible regarding work- much like most main brand dealers, I guess.

Things will go wrong. I doubt they're much less reliable than other similarly complicated modern cars– they all seem to use the same Siemens, Bosch, etc electronics. The Ford 2.7 V6 diesel is well known from Jaguar/ Land Rovers, pretty well respected and known for reasonably trouble free high-mile use. The usual emissions/ DPF/ EGR issues are healthily present, however, as on everything else modern and diesel.

The suspension is awesome if you like it, a very refined version of an already developed technology. The hydropnuematic system is very reliable, and cheap and straightforward to repair. It may have been the most complicated thing on a GS but on a C6 it's a breath of simplicity. As somebody else said, the front suspension bushes are underbuilt and will need replacing occasionally, so the ease with which the suspension can be depressurised is helpful here! (compared to spring compressors, etc).

I've always preferred big cars, but to me the size is a non-issue. It's perfectly navigable everywhere I've been, including dinky Italian towns where everyone drives Fiat 500's, tiny underground London car parks, etc. I can't imagine turning it down on that basis (or anything else similar)

I think it's a grand, silly car, but practical enough to rely on. It looks fabulous to my eye, and is unashamedly disinterested in pretending to be a racing car. It rolls about comfortably but has enough woosh for me, at least (I don't need much). I don't think it's really the true heir to the SM, DS, and CX that it hopes to be - it's too compromised for that - but it's pretty much the only modern car (modern-ish – ours is nearly 10 years old) that appeals to me.
