Afternoon all,
I know we've discussed this before, but the BBC have a unique view!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32481382
I'm not sure I've ever shown my counter part anywhere in the world except the UK for hiring a car... has anyone else? and why when all other countries are happy with the paper part are we supposed to get a code that only lasts for 72hrs...
Muppets the lot of them!

Can't see a car rental place in Greece doing anything different to be honest. Sounds like a ball ache.

I've never been asked for anything except the card when hiring abroad. I can't see that changing.

So what do Americans do when they hire a car abroad?

Yep, every year when I pick up my hire car in France.

I'm going again this year, about six weeks after the end of paper licences are to be abolished. Hopefully the bugs in the system will be ironed out before then hehe

The old-style paper licences, issued before the photo card was introduced in 1998, will remain valid.

Seems like a total fuster cluck to me.

You have to faf about getting a code, that you may or may not need, to provide to someone who most likely has no idea what to do with it if you do provide it. What a great system with no apparent flaws...

That's what I've got, never had any trouble hiring a car with it in lots of different parts of the world.

I heard the head of the AA on Radio 2 describing it as a bit of a mess and disappointing communication from the DVLA. In reality they will charge ahead causing all kinds of disruption to everyday people because in the long run it will save a small amount of money. The DVLA don't give a toss who has their holiday ruined

Received a lengthy, confusing tl;dr email from work about this today.

+1 for utter clusterf*ck.

Never had to show my paper license abroad, even with the rental companies' website clearly states that you must produce it.

Last girl I dealt with at the Hertz desk in California barely even looked at the card license, was more interested in upselling me the convertible Mustang (which I took, by the way).

Looks like the info will be obtained from here:

https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

I had a disqualification 16 years ago, came off my paper license years ago, now it's showing again on this site, looks like anyone with a disqualification even if spent will never be allowed to forget it, plus all others can easily see it now.
