I know that street well. Would be surprised if anyone sticks to 20 down there!
Indeed.

Apparently, the guy running the speed awareness course said, right, before we start you all have 5 mins to moan about how its not fair that you got a ticket.....this lead to a conversation about where people got a ticket...this lead to several people saying St Giles....lead to a show of hands with almost everyone in the room saying they were caught at St Giles!

120-ish – I was concentrating on the road rather than my speedo so can’t be 100% sure.

I pulled out of the petrol station enthusiastically which is where the copper was parked, I still don’t know how I didn’t see them! I got up to around 120 in the NSL zone before slowing down just as I hit the 40 zone.

As soon as I noticed the blue lights behind me I immediately slowed down and pulled over, got let away with a very, very stern word.

I’m more sensible now.

'over 70' in a 30 limit. No points etc. not even really a telling off....

also been let off for:
- no seat belt (3 times)
- wrong way down a one way street
- sparks from my exhaust touching down - blamed on a fat passenger
- more than a dab of oppo around a wet bend - that was a PC on a push bike who happened to be further down the road
- attempting to slide the girlfriend's mum's datsun cherry on a roundabout...

most recent of these was about 15 years ago..

I have never failed an attitude test - admit mistakes and beg for mercy - works for me

Almost 100 ........in a 30 frown

In my defence it was very late , or should I say early, the speed limit had recently changed from NSL and I hadn't visited the area since, I had all my paperwork with me including a forces ID card and I was very humble.

It was a copper on his own with a torch that flagged me down, I suspect he was after drink drivers or hiding/having a break, he certainly wasn't after people like me.

5 of us on sportsbikes (blades, R1's etc) at 6.30a.m on a summer sunday morning going down the M5 at Taunton on the way to camping. All had litre plus bikes, all had camping gear on the back.
We started having little races at 70 ish, and soon were having little races at 130+. Didn't really notice.
Empty motorway, dry, fantastic visibility, and we never saw the hulking great X5 with full lights coming up behind us. Doh!!

After 15 mins at the side of the road as one copper checked the bikes, the other complimanted us all on how well looked after our bikes were, then told us all to repeat after him "We were going too fast", "We are very naughty boys" "We wont do it again"
The he told us to bu**er off and and ride slower.
We maxed at 69 for the rest of the journey down.
Excellent, excellent policing.

52 in a 30, on a roundabout in my old Clio Trophy. Complimented me on my car, my attitude towards them and my driving skills but told me I'd be far more suited to a track and not the road then told me to bugger off.

15 miles of 95-97mph up the m6 from j12 on a CBR600 - nothing terribly scary.

Identifying vehicles from headlights behind using sportsbike mirrors is pretty hard, all I knew was a large dark saloon some 80-100 yards behind me.

Bearing in mind this was 9pm in a cold February - I had thermals, leathers then full-on waterproof hazmat suit and covered in super reflective strips - i was about as visible as the police car was.

They pulled me, I was grateful to sit in a warm car and eat some humble pie.
The magic line then came out "i've got one of those, looks like you look after it" (new chain, new tyres, etc)

"Please stay nearer 70 at least in this weather young man."

couple of "cool starey bra" tales from me.

My best friend out ran/escaped the police helicopter and plod on his Kawa 900R.

actually finally escaped by driving into someones house- i.e. knock on front door and drove his bike in. I appreciate this isn't a being let off tale though.

another mate had just finished a 12 hr night shift at a secure mental home. once of the things that just had occured was a patient tried to kill himself by running at a glass window and then plumeting to his death.

except my mate caught his legs and then spent 30 mins hanging onto him as he hung out of an upper floor window before help arrived.

so at the end of his shift he gave it hell on his 1000 cc bike. police pulled him, he explained his awful night. they said you've had enough already and all credit to you working with the loonies- on yr way.

my own tales- well been pulled a couple of times and then waved on my way- probably because I'm a nice polite person- not a police interceptors type chav.........

best was getting pulled over by a female policewoman (for literally nothing) - who then started chatting me up, asking me about my car, was I into clubs, car forums: she had a car like mine- ending with her giving me her name/number.....

and yes I would have, she was lovely: but no at that time I was with someone else.

Bit surprised though !!!

about 90 in a 40 limit, In my mums Minilaugh

when the ripper was on the go in yorkshire, early 80s?
the BiB used to set up roadblocks on the main roads on a regular basis,

coming home about 3 am from the girlfriends, I crested a slight hill, to see a bobby in the road waving a torch,
the brakes locked on and ended up broadside in the road next to him,

he asked if it was my car, "er no"

then wanted to check the boot, I had a hammer saw and chisels, been doing some DIY,

no mention of the speed, they were more bothered about the boot contents,

140-ish on the A34 in an e34 M5 many moons ago.

Was tootling along at about 80mph on a Sunday evening, heading down to near Newbury for work.

Saw a car catching up quite quickly, then a Saab 9000 shot past and I thought I'd have a bit of fun.

Caught up quite quickly and then sat about 100m off his rear (me in L1, Saab in L2). Did this for about 5 miles until I eased off about a mile before my junction.

Started to worry when the Saab slowed down as well, and I was well under 70mph before the Saab had braked enough to be level.

Window was wound down and a uniformed officer flashed a warrant card and wagged his finger at me.

Close call, but I think it was a Chief Super or something being driven home and with better things to do with his time.

Twice. Once in my X-Type not long after I got it, must have been upwards of 90mph on the M5 outside of Exeter. Very apologetic, agreed with everything he told me and promised not to be so stupid in future. Let off with a simple telling off.

Along an NSL between Exmouth and Exeter in my kit car following a plain black Mondeo. He came out of a 40mph and booted it, I followed looking to overtake but decided to stay behind him as something didn't appear right. Eventually he put on his blues and pulled me over into a layby. Asked me what speed I thought I was going, I replied 'same as you'. Proceeded to read me the riot act before sending me on my way telling me not to drive so dangerously in future. Good job he didn't notice my tax was out of date otherwise I might not have been so lucky.

Picked up my Porsche 911 in Andover and turned off the M5 at Junction 27 and headed up the N.Devon Link Rd humming along nicely in the 90s and hadn't twigged that with a low car with a roll cage means that you can't see much out the back. At least until the blues came on..

Had a chat with the young policeman who asked if I'd done any advance driving courses, I said that I hadn't but I'd been racing for years. He asked what I'd raced, so said saloon cars and recently one like the 911, but a newer model. He then said that he was sure that the car could handle the sort of speed I'd been doing (he clocked me at 95 mph) and that I could handle the speed as well, but please remember the speed limit is 70 mph. That was it, no ticket! and he didn't notice that because I hadn't taken my insurance certificate with me to pick the car up, it wasn't taxed.

not sure of the exact speed but neither was the biker cop lol,
but on pulling me over yelled "what was the speed limit back there?" to which I replied "erm 60",
he then proceeded to list about 5 speed limit changes (30/40/national)...he'd been trying to catch me for 7 miles after witnessing me "popping round 4 cars" in an overtake...I honestly thought it was bye bye licence, but after complementing the mini, and I had overtaken the cars nicely the problem was I had "kept my foot in afterwards", luckily all I got was a fixed penalty for my number plate spacing (I was only 21 hahaha) and a slap to take it easy in future.
I went back down that round last year (Kidderminster to Bromsgrove road)scary what speed I could take the Mini down that....you live and learn....then buy a faster car driving

Conversely, a friend just went to a speed awareness course for 22 in a 20. Apparently the room was full of people who had been caught in exactly the same place, St Giles in Oxford, a spot in which I may or may not occasionally hit almost 40 as it is basically three lanes each way and good visibility.
Thanks for that. St Giles is where I usually open the taps on the Blackbird after having to filter all the way from Botley. It's like the Mulsanne Straight compared to the rest of Oxford's horrific road network. I'll be more cautious in future.

About 125mph. But he said he didn't object to that as much as taking the roundabout at about 70-80........

I was driving my old Cayman S from Derby to Leeds late on a rainy night a year ago and was making 'significant progress' on an empty A38 and noticed a car behind me keeping up for a good couple of miles. Of course with it being dark and rainy I couldn't see what it was and then all of a sudden as I move to the left lane it surges past me and the police lights came on as it got in front. It was an unmarked BMW X5 and as soon as he'd got in front of me and slowed me down he then zoomed off again.

It was more of a 'rolling warning' to calm down but I can't help but feel that if I wasn't in a performance car, which can comfortably cruise at that speed, I'd have been pulled over. Either that or the lack of a hard shoulder and pouring rain saved me!

Showing off in my MK1 Golf GTI, had a mate in the car and I had just finished my shift on the bar at the pub I worked at, hammering down a 40 limit I passed and AA van with a car behind it and behind that a Police Sierra, the Copper clocked me but was pointing the wrong way so I decided to jib down a couple of side roads to avoid an awkward explanation, the second I realised my plan hadn't worked I stopped and was promptly along with my mate dragged from the car and cuffed.

Was being bked by the copper, hands behind my back with my front against the car, my mate was on the other side, both looking very worried, thought I had lost my licence for sure, I gave him my details and once he ascertained it was my car, it was insured and I was cooperating his demeanour changed and he removed the cuffs. He explained that he saw a Golf GTI flying towards Wythenshawe (can be a colourful area) and assumed we had stolen it, he calmed down and seemed to be ok and he asked me why I was going so fast and I volunteered falteringly "We were looking for a chippy", I expected a lecture about no chips being worth dying for and being told what the next step was to me becoming a Bus passenger and he just said "Hmm, chips, I think midweek you will be struggling, but there is one on Portway that might still be open and if you get a move on you might be lucky", get a move on indeed, no points, no producer, no nothing !

That's hard to believe. Mobile or fixed camera?
