I think you want to keep it a reliable choice too. the celica seems the best choice so far, looks pretty good, nice seating position, big hatch type boot, 4 seats, easy to drive, fast-ish and should be reliable. hey Im almost talking myself into buying one. lol.

A 25 year old Volkswagen Golf? They weren't good looking when they were new. They were just fashionable.

The Audi TT is probably a good choice if you just want something which looks nice and will impress girls. I doubt that the Vauxhall Calibra cuts it now!

Classic insurance (may need to be over 25)?

Just want to reiterate that my budget is 5k including insurance - some of these suggestions seem very optimistic haha

I've just stumbled across the Alfa Romeo 147 whilst looking at GT's. Are they worth considering?

VW Corrado VR6?

The only remaining credible 90's Coupe? And just starting to appreciate too.

159 Sportwagon

Edit: Ah, I didn't read the whole OP, so the 159 sportwagon may be the best looking car you can buy for 5k, but proably can't be had including insurance....

Hmmm... 156 sportwagon?

Sort of. The GT is a miss mash of 147 and 156 parts. And yes, avoid Selespeed like a zombie with ebola.

In budget, insurance should be ok within reason, and looks great!

Stigma aside these really are fantastically good looking.

Get a W209(2002) Mercedes CLK you can get anything from a CLK200 to a CLK320 for that range, but i'm guessing the 200 would be your best bet, really not a young persons car insurance wise so should be reasonable. Running costs are reasonable if you are able to service yourself or have a good local garage. parts are available from ECP, etc for sensible prices. I've got a CLK320 so am a little biased but had mine nearly 2 years now and cant think of anything to replace it with other than a newer clk or E class coupe

Always wanted a MK4 as a kid. Definitely going to have a look at the R32, good suggestion!

I love mine - had it for the best part of a year, never gone wrong and went straight through the MOT. Not a sports car but comfy, great ride and loads of kit as standard
