For a start its around £500 for a years tax on a PZ so with the new tax rules that's £3,500 on car, £500 on tax £1k insurance now you said your quoted £2.5k for insurance.

So as I said earlier forget the RX8 you cannot afford to buy one which also means your unlikely to afford the running costs.

Fair enough. I'm definitely interested in the Toyota Celica and VW Golf MK4, but particularly the Alpha Romeo 147 (post facelift).

Another vote for the Hyundai Coupe 2.0 SIII, I bought this 2007 57 reg last year for £4K privately, 29k miles, fsh, 1 owner, dirt cheap to insure, cheap on parts (but little ever goes wrong), not a bad drive but not a proper sports car by any means and a bit crashy over our pot holed mess, however it's well specc'd (air con, cruise, heated leather seats, sunroof, heated mirrors, not much looks better for the money all things considered.

Classic insurance, not Korean and not a modern shopping trolley.. Oh and you won't lose any money when you come to sell it ( you might even make some)

Another vote for an Alfa GT. Get the V6 and not only will you have a gorgeous Italian coupe, but one of the most glorious soundtracks on the road.

in a similar boat as yourself mate 23, 1yr NCB, similar budget.

Here is my list of cars that seem to work out.

BMW 330ci
Smart ForFour Brabus
Fiesta st
Toyota Glanza v
Panda 100hp
Clio 182 trophy
Mondeo ST220
Subaru Legacy GTB e tune
Renault sport Megane 225

It has been said before some cars will surprise you with insurance. The BMW for instance i can, for some reason, insure for less than my 1.2 grande Punto at about 700. I think i will end up going for something that is less likely to throw up any crazy bills, or i might just go all out add on a small car loan to my £5k and get something I really want.

The answer is Alfa. The decision is which one...?
My immediate thoughts upon reading the thread title hehe
The problem with getting an Alfa when you're young is they absolutely ruin you for anything else on the road. I bought my first one when I was 21. I'm 48 this year and have only had two cars since that weren't an Alfa (Golf and a Holden).

He's too young, needs to sow his wild oats in something French or German, get some experience (perspective). Yes, I'm kidding. Buy the GT, it's the final iteration of the 156/147, has sportswagin type space and has most all the bugs worked out. Best choices are the V6 or 1.9JTDm derv. In blue. With red leather. Wibble.

It's purely subjective. What in your opinion is better looking for the money?

Definitely the Alfa GT and GTV, not so much the 147 though. Also I would second the Audi TT.

Funny, but true.

He needs a GT V6, but would probably be better off with a GTV 2.0 ts for £2-3k.

The jts is a pig of an engine. Not as good as the old twin sparks and unreliable, and that's the problem with the GT. I have the GT V6 but it's expensive to run, although I will never sell it mind, but the only other option is the jtd, which is very tunable and a good engine, but it's a diesel.

That's why I say a GTV ts would be a good option.

So are the 1.6 twin sparks ok?

The Alfa cited is a massive porkster. The badge and a few flares do not redeem the FIAT platform compromises. The Peugeot coupe wins thus far.
