Do BMW do the ppk for this? The performance power kit? OEM performance increase.

The pre-LCI M135i was generally at least as fast as the Golf R on track but quite a bit slower than the E87 1M. As I said earlier, the fundamentals are there and obviously BMW had a price / performance point in mind but it appears to need some suspension work to fully realise it's potential. The laws of physics dictate that with equally good suspension, a Golf shouldn't be able to match it on track.

I've not kept up-to-date with the news recently but I assume BMW aren't making a 1M hatch this time around?

The M2 is coming later this year, which I think will be the flagship model. An M hatch ? hmm I wonder if BMW would do it ?

There has long been talk of an M140i model, but I haven't seen anything concrete that it will appear.

BMW look to be making a small sedan based on the fwd 2 Active Tourer platform for the US market (1 series is not sold there - I guess they still thought the hatchback guise doesn't fit the US market). Don't know if they will do a "hot" model as thats the M235i stomping ground really.

They're not rules, they're opinions.

If people like the sound coming of their speakers, then crack on. Just don't get upset if others find it cringeworthy. For me it conjures up the image of a kid in a Corsa piping a Grand Prix car soundtrack through the speakers via bluetooth. Hilarious.

It's no more hilarious than otherwise superfluous gizmos under the bonnet to amplify and augment the engine sound.

Interestingly, if the M performance back box is fitted BMW say to turn the symposer (fake noises) down.

As I previously said I'm not a fan of fake engine noises but the BMW one does actually sound like the engine, unlike the golf one - the VW would be unplugged on day 1.

After spending 2 days cleaning the 1er I can agree with people who say it doesn't photograph well, there are so many curves and lines in the body, I think its interesting and a world away from the plain, slab sided cars we've been accustomed to.

As a road car I don't see what all the complaints about the chassis are. I live in the country and mine gets a hard B road workout everyday, it's fab.
The only thing I would change is the diff as there are a couple tight and bumpy 2nd gear corners where the car doesn't know what to do when you get back on the power.

Overall it's a great road car and I don't see how a Golf R could be any quicker on a track. Having driven the Golf R I'd say the only reason it feels marginally quicker on a twisty road is because the AWD gives you some sort of safety net and the typical driver will push that little harder. Apart from any slight traction advantage both cars have 4 wheels and 4 tyres so have the ability to do most roads at pretty much the same speeds!!

I took the BMW as the overall package was more appealing, especially the drivetrain. Engine is a peach and loves being revved out (even though you don't need to to make progress.)

Good car overall, don't think it looks to bad.

Fully agree with this. The outgoing model looked hideous with the stupid front headlights that went at a silly upswept angle near the grill. Also hated the rear lights on the older one, if you put a VW badge on the rear; it could be mistaken for a Polo at a glance.
This definitely is worthy of the term "facelift"

Still not a looker, but a vast improvement over the pre-facelift car.

It's beyond me why BMW seems completely incapable of producing a good looking car in its entirety. They always fk something up, the front the back, the side, the headlights, something is always iffy about them.
I think BMW do a thing which I refer to as 'visual detuning' where the top end and the M cars are conceived first, then the rank and file models are made uglier to increase the halo effect of the premium ones. Clearly there is still some hangover from the Bangle era of whacky design, although the more recent models are less ugly than the mid-noughties cars. Saying that they do seem to age better than other cars, the e60 5s look good now but I don't recall people finding the e34, 36, 39 and 38 at all challenging to look at compared to their replacements.

Been thinking this for a while. 'Visual Detuning', I will use that... Thanks.

I had a five door auto for a while, and couldn't wait to get rid of it.

Yes, the engine is wonderful, the gearbox very good, the pro-nav excellent - but the ride and handling were poor on anything other than perfectly smooth tarmac, the interior plasticy and my one kept going wrong with BMW seemingly unable to find out why.

The only performance parts I can find on the UK site are a sports exhaust and the LSD. The rest appear to be cosmetic (e.g. carbon mirror caps and interior trim) and 19" wheels etc.
