Can anyone explain/confirm this 'artificially augmented' engine noise?

My bro and his missus have the non'Life Cycle Impulse' M135i and we have tried to find the source of this wizardry but cannot hear it or see any function to turn it on or off. We became convinced it didn't exist.
Older BMWs use a symposer in the air induction to increase the noise. It's a vibrating diaphram that is then connected to the bulkhead to give more noise at certain engine speeds. They work quite well. You cannot 'turn them off' without disconnecting the piping and plugging it up.

I would suspect the M135i has this also (my Z4 3.0 had it as does my friends 130i).

Don't get why people are having an issue with the rear - it's the first 1 Series rear that looks good IMO. I've always felt that square rear lights look very utilitarian whereas long, horizontal ones are positively sexy. This is the first 1 Series I actually think looks right.
Me too. A massive improvement styling-wise over the original IMHO.

When I saw the photo of the rear the first word that came to mind was Hyundai...which was a shame.
You are too kind.

It plays a pretend engine note through the speakers. Like Gran Turismo.

Nope. It's fake synthesised additional noises through the speakers. I don't mind the induction tube or diaphragm methods. Those are real, just amplified. But I really object to pretend noises.

Have you been in one though? it really doesn't sound 'fake' and I can confirm now the weather is better and I m driving with the windows down the real engine noise is very very good indeed.

I recently drove a golf R with the real noise induction symposia thing and that sounded far more 'fake'.

It really is a non issue (for me anyway) in fact I didn't know it was fake until a few months after I leased it.

the obvious difference being when you are playing Gran Truism that there isn't a 3litre 6 cylinder actual engine in the front producing an actual great noise as well.

The facelift takes it from ugly to average looking in my eyes. A step up, now no worse than the Golf, Audi A3 and others.

"This is a BMW Life Cycle Impulse (LCI)"

God, that is so pretentious. It's a midlife refresh. Everyone knows it's a midlife refresh, so why give it such a ridiculous acronym?
I'm guessing, and this is only a guess, that it's a direct translation from German, which is a language that has it's own particular way of putting things.

As for the car itself, gotta admit I think it looks pretty good, preferable imo to the ultra bland Golf/A3, and less Cheshire than the A45. Plus that peach of an engine, and the fact it sends drive to the correct part of the car, means this would be top of my list if I was in the market for an uberhatch. As it is I'm probably more likely to replace the current 1'er Coupe with a 2 Series, but this would make me reconsider.

YMMV, IMHO, etc etc.

I test drove both the M135i and Golf R last summer and the BMW is certainly more realistic than the Golf (which sounded awful to my ears), but the BMW just sounded too smooth. Much prefer the resonance tubes of the Focus ST or my Alfa. Real noise amplified is always preferable.

Fair enough as I said just wind the windows down for the real noise.

The problem (or not if you're not bothered) is that modern cars are so well sound proofed in the cabin the real noise just doesn't come through anymore!

Great to drive, love mine.

Still no looker, but the combo of 6 cylinder engine and auto makes a fantastic day to day car.

A six is always preferable to a four for day to day IMHO
