Do you compliment other drivers' cars, or...

I suspect you were seconds away from being car jacked. Seems you had a lucky escape.

I was stopped at a set of lights the other day and some guy ran over and started questioning me about what I was driving.
Wasn't sure if to talk to him or wind the window up and get the fk out of there.
Some people are odd

I don't generally approach people myself as I am generally not aware enough of my surroundings to notice. I do get a lot of good attention about my car, only problem is that I know it will degenerate into some comment or other about mpg, which gets rather boring rather quickly.
Found it rather odd to be challenged to a race by a bloke in a Matiz yesterday...

Is Pistonheads populated by the socially awkward?
You've only just realised? ie. Relatively well-adjusted, sociable and normal.
...but then again, this is the internet.
Often commented on classic cars when filling up. There's no danger that the owner feels you are going to corner them as bot parties can't hang around for long. I have never had a bad experience. Most owners are happy to be complimented and give some basic info about the car, ie "just completed the restoration" or "just bought it".

People approached me in the past. I have very little social skills and wish they fked off and died. Just shut your mouth, look at whatever you want to look at but don't approach me and ask me questions. Some people honestly hate other people and don't want to be spoken too, and when you come off as an ass it's somehow my fault that I was rude? I'm not the one who asked you to approach me /rant.
How have you got to the position of owning an Aston Martin without being able to talk to people?StottyEvo said:
Why would you buy an Aston Martin and not expect to talk to people in my concern. If you buy a super car you're going to get a reaction from the general public, that's kind of the point of the cars.
I bought my Aston Martin because I wanted one, not to put on a show for the general public and certainly not to give impromptu interviews about the damn thing. It's just a car.CarreraWB said:

It's not often I'll talk to someone about their car, it would need to be something really special and the right situation to do that, but when I have it's been really well received and the owner often seems relieved to be hearing positive comments!
I do, however, make a point of approving when I see someone driving something interesting. Something like a really well-kept classic, a kit car out in the rain, a rarity only likely to be bought by petrolheads - all will get the thumbs up from me and it's often returned, which is nice
I saw a pretty new Maserati Quattroporte edging the other way in terrible stop-start city traffic a few weeks ago. The driver looked like he was having a st time crawling it through that traffic rather than being on a proper road, but the car was magnificent and I had a lot of respect for him stomaching the huge depreciation it must be nobbling him for. Caught his eye, big thumbs up, his face lit up as if he'd just remembered why he bought the thing in the first place. Lovely to see.
Proper "car people" as a whole are a really open, inclusive bunch and love to talk about or see appreciation for their passion, so keep doing what you're doing and don't worry about the occasional socially awkward ones out there.

Ah no, you've confused proper car people with proper car bores. Easy mistake to make.Impasse said:

Ah no, you've confused proper car people with proper car bores. Easy mistake to make.I'm not talking about a ten-minute lecture on the valve lift strategy, nor some in-depth report of your ownership experience, all it often takes is a simple acknowledgement. You're a member of a motoring forum, which suggests you like to talk about cars. Why is this less appropriate out in public than it is over the Internet? That's why I see social awkwardness as the only logical explanation for your standpoint on this. I'm not saying that's something you must change or be criticised for, but I don't think you should defend it by insulting the rest of us either.
Quite often! A guy in a brand new red RS4 Avant in Morrisons car park delighted in telling me all about his car and the spec he'd chosen.
Then more recently at a Shell station I complimented a chap on his lovely Guards Red 997 GTS - told him it looked absolutely perfect and exactly how I'd like mine if I could afford it! He was tickled pink!
Not long ago my car was paid such a compliment. I had just parked up my old Impreza wagon in a semi-rough part of Aberdeen and a not overly refined sort of chap strolling past with his concubine and offspring in a pram said: "'At's a nice car m8" to which I responded gratefully but suggested she was a bit long in the tooth and had seen better days. He replied "bet she still shifts like f*ck though!" with a manic grin on his face. Made my day!
