My POS 196k B5 A4 115 that is.

3 hours towing to wales, half the journey my foot was planted on the floor, barely able to to 55 on the flat, oil temp up to 140 or so, coolant steady 90. been using a small amount of water lately, unsure if its a leak or HG.

what do we think?

One of these with 196,000 miles on the clock and presumably the 1.9 TDI engine that produces 115bhp.

My = The OP's wink
POS = piece of st
196k = 196,000 miles
B5 A4 = specific model of Audi
115 = power output of the aforementioned B5 A4

You drove it for an hour and a half at wide-open throttle, only managing 55mph, and didn't lift off despite seeing oil temperatures 30°C over what's normal?

If it wasn't dying before, it fking is now.

Depends if you want to spend any money on it as to whether it's dead or dying. I personally would think that it may be time for it to go to that big, shiny pointy shoe, TK Maxx suit, Audi dealership in the sky. Everything else will also be tired on the car. If you have spent money on the suspension and drive train recently and you are happy with the car it may warrant a small expense to investigate.

Much smoke? Check for leaks in turbo pipework, a split hose will do what you describe.

Cheers for that. I thought 196k A4 but then with all the other stuff thrown in I was unsure.

Check for an air leak.

Ill check for an air leak.

Im spending as little as possible on this junk, its a dreadful car!

slow
noisy
stupidly soft wallowy suspension
that also manages to be the crashiest i have ever felt
uncomfortable
electrical issues
only does about 35-40 mpg
small boot for an estate
its only saving grace is that it has working AC.

maybe i want it to die, so i can replace it with a large petrol motor!
i need an excuse!

Check for a blocked exhaust? My mate had this issue, car would hardly shift, suspected a slipping clutch. Took it in and during a test drive the backbox exploded, then it shifted fine again.

But if you want rid of the heap, it definitely has lupus, leprosy and AIDS. Get shot of it.

Replace the fuel filter, a partially clogged one produces exactly those symptoms.

Overboosting causing the car to go to limp mode. Possibly sticky vanes.

The oil temperature would not get that high with any sort of power loss, the oil is getting hot because the engine is working hard, and the engine is not overheating because the water is doing its job as well. I'd be looking at the caravan brakes. Take it out without anything hooked on, then tell us what it's like.

A quick Google would suggest that the A4 has trouble with sticking brakes as well. Could be a cracked head, another weak point on these "bomb proof" engines.

Surely not on this model.

OP, that mpg sucks, my 80tdi which shares engine stuff would never drop below 50, the gentleman I sold it to got 45 towing a caravan across Spain

In this case it's probably easier just to replace it. You don't even like it to begin with so why bother even putting an ounce of effort into fixing the long list of potential causes.

35 mpg towing a big fking caravan is good going. It's like having the world's biggest and stupidest airbrake on the back constantly.
