Hey guys, I'm planning on getting my second car this summer when I have 2 years no claims, and while I have started to look around online, i'm just curious to what people may recommend. I was originally thinking along the hot hatch route, but have considered RWD's, classics and even offroaders as well. I set the budget at 6k, although that is just a guideline and there is room for adjustment with that.

Cheers for the help,
Dave.

Not joking but, mx5?

Anything seen as a 'hot' hatch will be a nightmare/expensive to insure at your age.

A second car (as a toy) or your second car (after your first)?

Requirements for said car?

When I said Second car, I meant after the first wink

Requirements, well mpg isn't too much of an issue, as the commute is only a 2 mile journey on weekdays, and total manual mileage of only around 5k miles.
I suppose what I am looking for is something than can put a smile on my face, while also being able to carry 4 passengers.

And as for the insurance quote, I think I am one of the more fortunate ones, as for instance I can get fully comp on a 05 reg VXR astra for just £1100, and thats with myself being the main driver.

With reasonable insurance costs being open to you how about some of these:

Diesel Fabia vRS
I had one and can vouch for it being brisk, cheap running costs (Inlc fuel, insurance, parts, tyres etc)

Bought mine for £4750, sold around 2 years later with an additional 40K miles on the clock for £3500

One of my best car ownership experiences, loved it and only sold as I was doing high miles and wanted things like cruise control, cup holder, armrest etc.

For 5000 miles a year, I'd be going with petrol.

Swift Sport or a Fiesta ST.

Both handle fantasticly well, and are reasonably quick too. Both cheap to run and insure.

You'd be able to buy an ST and insure It for the year with your budget, plus possibly even have a chunk of cash left!

My suggestion would be a Mini cooper S, It’s fun fast and has four seats.
As for the insurance… if you can afford an Astra VXR then this should be about the same.
With 6k you could find a nice one and afford to run it.

Get a classic. Huge fun. Great way to learn the basics of mechanics. Best way to pick up girls/guys (whatever your inclination).

ETA: Got it wrong, got my 330 when I was 20. But my comments still stands!

Mk5 GTI has to be the answer here!

Quick, discreet and practical. £6k will get a nice one.
