Parking spaces round here are so in demand doing that will get you keyed.
I parked wide to avoid a huge & deep puddle in a woodland car park with unmarked bays.

When I came back later I found some t1t had bent my mirror back and parked so close that their mirror was almost touching the side of my car, they had also keyed down both doors right down to the primer.

I went mad; red mist descended & I couldn't stop myself from kicking in their rear door.

Edited to add:-

My wife had to stop me returning to put all their windows in too.

It was long term parking; they didn't expect me to find the damage they had done.

It was actually a member of staff where we were staying; because I'd "taken his usual space"

My general policy is as high up or far away from everything else depending on the car park, and wherever possible pick a space with no parking space on the passenger side.

First time parking in my work's multi story with my lovely old car, parked miles away next to the pillars so I'm far away from any door slinging action. Returned with a crack in my bumper, like a tow hook has hit it...

I picked up a mate from a pub in a brand new M3, parked in the middle of a completely empty row. Found him in the pub, he finished his pint and went for a piss then we left, 5 minutes tops. Came out to an 8 inch crease down the drivers door, someone had clearly pulled up, slammed open a door against it and driven off again.

A hugely annoying part of modern motoring I'm afraid.

Early one Saturday morning, I visited a local Tescos in my Merc 129. The car park was almost empty, yet even so, I decided to park the car at the far side of the car park to avoid other traffic.

Before I got out of the car, I was aware of another vehicle ( a Honda Jazz I believe) pull alongside into the space by my passenger door.

Already slightly miffed that someone had avoided all the other empty spaces, I was alarmed when the elderly lady driver opened her door with considerable force into my car.

She ignored the incident, so I engaged her in conversation.

" I didn't mean to" she said, " but I need another car to line up against" .

Luckily, the Merc's plastic door panel withstood the impact, but her Jazz looked as though it had been valeted by Edward Scissorhands, almost certainly on the many previous occasions she had "lined up".

I try not to park over 2 bays, but if I do have to use a car park, park it at an angle in the bay, eg front offside wheel as far over to the right and left nearside wheel over to the left. It makes the space look a bit tight for dopey drivers so they seem to go and park somewhere else. Also, the gap at the doors if they do park next to me is not that much narrower than normal. Seems to be very effective at deterring the muppets without parking over the lines, so actually legit.

I hate people even thinking about parking next to me. I had a bloke in an old mini clatter his door on to my new car once - had 24 miles on the clock. He wasn't in the least bothered.

Now I've written this, I'm bound to get another ding. Last one I got, a huge one on the door, cost £90 for the dent man, and it's still there...

Benefits scum don't look at it that way though because they haven't paid for the car.

My brother worked at a Vauxhall dealership from 20009 until 2013 and had to deal with the motability cars. Some people need them, granted. But more often than not he had to deal with the benefit scrounging 'entitled' c***s who always demanded a top spec car too. I say if they get anything at all, it should be a base model...

Digga snr is a serial Jagoholic and owned a string of XJSs - not the easiest of motors to get in and out of at the best of times, owing to long doors and wide sills. He used to fume about the fact that wherever he parked in a near empty car park, someone would always be parked next to him when he returned to the car.

The flipside of this phenomenon are the c**ts who think that just because they have an Audi TT/Range Rover Sport (nothing against either car, but these seem common offenders) they can park in disabled bays.

If my Omega ever allows me to get it roadworthy and stop breaking, it needs a few bits of bodywork doing.
MrsSE is under strict instructions that if she borrows it, and it completes a journey without breaking down, she is to park it in the furthest corner of the car park. I can't imagine what its like to have happen to a traditionally valuable car...

My car is now wearing;
- creased and scuffed NS front wing continuing in to the front of the door
- creased OS door below the trim line
- scuffed NS door right in the middle of the panel

Every single one of those being done to it when parked. There's a real danger if I ever do catch someone doing the next bit of damage, I'll suddenly have a "Vinnie Jones character in a Guy Ritchie movie" moment.

One of the biggest contributors is the Supermarkets making the parking spaces too small. The one nearest to me is never ever full, so they could have just them all bigger and had less of them, if i'm in a 2 door Coupe then it's difficult to get in and out even if everyone is parked sensibly.
If i'm in something decent I just park over two bays at once, fk 'em.
Plus cars have been getting wider and flabbier.

Always had fun negotiating the multi storey at Teddington Studios (Where PH is based) which must of been built when the Austin 7 was the car of choice. biggrin
Car parking spaces are a standard size, I design car parks.

Why aren't the spaces wider? Presumably it's simple £££ : spaces but spaces do seem a lot narrower than I recall.

The standard 2.4mx4.8m is from the 70s so cars were smaller I would presume, I personally always use that size, I don't make them smaller to squeeze an extra one in, I cant imagine anyone else doing that either tbh, we who do the donkey work just follow a standard to the letter, makes things easier and quicker for us. (it always useful to have something that you know the size of on aerial photo's/old drawings etc for scale reasons)

The biggest challenge these days is creatively making it a challenge for a certain sector of societies vehicles to get into our car parks.

That's kind of my point though - I wasn't around in the 70's but all I know is I drive a Golf or a little Mazda depending where I am, and in any standard space I'm very conscious of feeling incredibly close to the neighbouring car.

I'm surprised spaces haven't been made larger to take into account that cars have got bigger, SUVs, MPVs, hell people seem to have got bigger from the sights I see smile

I have been known to park in the far corner of car parks (or somewhere very quiet) and occupy 2 spaces.
I know that I shouldn't. However, the way I see it is that by doing it in a quiet corner, on a quiet deck/area of the car park I'm not causing the crime of the century. I will use my common sense, and if it's busy just MTFA, accept a new dent and park normally. But in a quiet car park in a deserted corner, deliberately away from the entrances/exits I see no major harm.

I'm getting more and more aggravated by knobheads who cannot park, or go to the gym or use a modicum of common sense and not use my car as a fking doorstop when I'm sat in the fking thing!

I've told people to watch out before and usually met with either a "fk off" or a grumble and a "it's only a car" and very rarely get a sorry!
