VW DSG Gearbox problems
Discussion
Hi Folks
I'm new to PH so be patient, I have a VW Golf Match 1.9 tdi and it has a triptronic DSG gearbox, it has started sticking in 2nd and 3rd when in the drive mode, on some occasions it drive normally up through the gears 1 to 6 and changes up and down according to the driving criteria. Also it keeps brining up random warning lights on the dashboard even though it is driving well.
It drives perfectly well in Manual mode which makes me think it is not a major mechanical problem, but not being a mechanic I don't know
Has anybody else had this problem and if so what is the fix for it PLEASE HELP its driving me nuts

Firstly to save you confusing if your searching, tiptronic and dsg are two totally different gearboxes. You more likely have a dsg box although older Golfs had tiptronic as well. All recent VW cars will log faults via the ECU and a dealer or any decent mechanic will be able to read these faults, this is where to start. Also how long have you had it, has the gearbox been serviced to recommendations, i.e. Fluid and filter changed?
Cupramax Thanks for your feedback and advice much appreciated, cars hey what a pain in the backside at times, it is a DSG box you are right which can be driven in either auto or manual mode, I had it serviced recently and as far as I am aware it hadn't been done before I could be wrong, it is 2007 Model

Here we go guys, when I set off it will drive to 3rd gear and get stuck, I then manually move it up through the gears to 6th, once in 6th gear run it for a couple of minutes then knock it into DRIVE MODE(Auto) where it then proceeds to drive normally up and down the gears. It brings up Fault lights for ABS and the Anti skid but the car is running well, it's obviously an intermittent fault and I'm convinced it's not a mechanical fault as it drives through the gears normally its just the initial issue from start up
Does the invoice for the service specifically state that the gearbox oil was changed and that the oil they used was the correct type?. I would want to *know* the gearbox was serviced, not just think it was.
Warning lights for ABS and traction control would lead me to think you have a wheel speed sensor issue and if the gearbox ECU couldn't be sure of the car's speed (due to faulty speed sensor) then it wouldn't know which gear to shift into hence becoming "stuck" in a gear.
As mentioned, take the car to a good garage with diagnostic equipment and mechanics that know how to use it. You can do this before or after you have assured yourself that the gearbox has been serviced correctly.

Guys
Thanks for your help I took it straight to the garage last night when the fault warning lights came on again (It has been an intermittent fault) anyway the rear left wheel speed sensor has a fault on it, they are ordering one today and I'll let you know if it does the trick, like you guys I suspect it will
Thanks for your help along the way much appreciated

Thanks for posting up what was eventually wrong,
Yep, always good to get a conclusion!Cupramax said:
worrying the more tech that gets stuffed in cars, with a manual box you probably would never have noticed.

You'd probably have noticed that, even with a manual box.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
