they're about £18k in dubai brand new and were offered for £15k in last year's ramadan sale. 21ish for the TRD edition. 2 year old cars [manual box] can be picked up for as low as £10k, even less for a US import.

At 18k and decent marketing, they would fly off the shelves.

Almost seems as if Toyota have given up on the UK market, which should have been a major one.

One of the stupidest posts ever goes something like this: If Toyota sold this at £5k less than it costs to build, they would sell more.

As for the power and speed: if it really was an 8 second 0-60 car, I would agree that it is likely to be annoyingly slow; but if it is more like 7 seconds flat (or less), that's probably fine.

I say this because I have driven a few cars around the 7-8 seconds mark and find that it is quite an important threshold (assuming that 0-60 times are reflective of general acceleration, which they usually are if you adjust a bit to account for the driven wheels).

My wife's 320i is supposedly a 7.5 second car, and is JUST fast enough to be fun to drive, but it only takes a full boot and 2 or 3 passengers to make it annoyingly slow. So, for my taste, 7 seconds or so is probably the minimum that would be acceptable in a fun car.

Go ahead and say I am obsessed with power and speed, but I'm really not! Most of my posts on PH are about how car makers should stop obsessing about power and 0-60 times and build cars that are actually fun to drive. The problem is that, for most people, a very slow sports car would be annoying because you have to overtake a fair bit to make progress, and a slow car makes overtaking much harder.

150-200bhp per ton is probably the sweet spot for road driving, and the GT86 is pretty much there. If I wanted a 2+2, it would definitely be on my list.

Good on Toyota and Suburu for making it. I think getting people to test drive it is the hurdle. I can't imagine many would choose any other car if they tested it against the competition.
Lease prices are also a bugger, it seems, and I don't really see why it is so expensive to hire.

my case in point: 2 year old for less than £10,500. i do think they're overpriced in the UK.

In what way is a foreign economy any yardstick for the UK?

And a bloody used market economy at that!

Do acceleration stats make driving fun?

Not in the slightest, but being unable to overtake a diesel crapbox that is driving more slowly than you want to is pretty infuriating. Our roads are pretty damn crowded, and people generally drive very slowly around corners and accelerate on the straights, meaning that you have to sit behind them unless you can overtake quickly in what you are driving.

How does the tax regime compare? Do imported cars get taxed more than those built in the EU?

Agree with this too.
