If we assume you'd have to be someone half-way interested in the act of driving to buy one anyway, it's not fancy enough / the right brand for urban trendies, it's not fast enough/comfy enough for big motorway users, and it's not cheap enough for those on a really tight budget. It suits someone who is on an OK salary but doesn't have a huge amount of cash to spend, probably lives in a suburban/rural area, and has a shortish A/B road commute - so a Northern car, rather than a Southern one, if we want to play geographic stereotypes.
Quite an accurate analysis of my buying decision. Except I'm between Bristol and Bath, so not very North.

How do you know how many I see?
As it happens I see them very often -probably on most days around the South Manchester & Cheshire areas
Perhaps it's just a North West thing. Seen plenty on Merseyside in addition to the areas you've mentioned. As it happens I see them very often -probably on most days around the South Manchester & Cheshire areas

There's plenty of them in Hampshire, you don't get much more Southerner than that.
OK, not everyone in the south is a diesel Audi driving shy Tory. kambites said:

Me neither, getting blown into the weeds by an X5 is embarrassing in a sports car
Having never raced anyone on the road, I don't really find this a problem. Sorry, well and trully in the "needs more power" camp
Surely a large contributing factor to how the car has been doing is down to the people that sell it? I went into my local Toyota shop and they were worse than clueless when it came to selling a driver focussed car to someone who had any knowledge beyond what side the steering wheel was on. It was an experience that is actually making me cringe just thinking about some of the fluff the salesman came out with.
Lack of power isn't so much the problem as delivery of the power if you ask me, it's just a tad flat. Hondas with similar power feel much quicker due to it all being in that last quarter of the dial.
They are a rare sight up here in the west of scotland. We have the roads for them but maybe not the weather (or the run off on most roads). I can go weeks without seeing one.

It's not a Subaru option, Litchfield do one.
Comparing to something like the S2000, the BRZ86 is about the same weight (a few kilos lighter, depending on the info source) and 30bhp down. I'd be interested to see if a bit of modding could claw back that 30bhp deficit (Litchfield claim about 12bhp from a Milltek exhaust while shedding a few extra kilos) and see how it compares to the highly regarded S2000.
Further ETA: Yup, exhaust and remap they reckon yields 25bhp.

It needs another 100bhp and bigger and better wheels. Those look like halfords finest.
Go buy a 370Z. The GT86 with a big more power would be fantastic.
Dakkon said:
I'm sorry but the 350/370Z is not a good suggestion, it is far too heavy and hides what is really going on underneath you, it is far from what you would call an agile sports car, but a very competant GT car.
The GT86 with a big more power would be fantastic.
And how much more would the GT86 weigh (and cost) if you added 100bhp and all the other things which needed upgrading to realistically support it to an OEM standard? An owner might be able to simply bolt on a supercharger for the extra power but Toyota could not. The GT86 with a big more power would be fantastic.

Oh, and southern GT86 owner checking in. The theory actually makes some sense, the roads around here are pretty crowded most of the time, so the opportunities for enjoying a drivers car are probably more limited than someone who has access to the open roads of the north
