2:05. Mere mortals do not recover that. He certainly had a lick on hehe
It's not just the recovery of the rear end, but the getting through the gate. Even if you could recover the rear, the chances of going through that gateway without hitting either post would be slim for most of us.
Especially epic when you realise he had a puncture from the impact with the wall causing the "dear god" moment, and finished the stage as if it hadn't happened! thumbup

I take it that's the In Car Manx video from 1984. There are other gems on that vid such as the Brandywell/Druidale stage driven in almost zero visibility. You don't see much but the co drivers comments are worth it alone.
I live not far from these roads and they are truly scary. Last year on Tholt y Will (the stage in the clip) cars were hitting 140 plus mph and some drivers were heard to say that the top Evos and Imprezas were too fast for it.
Personally I used to be a good passenger but experience seems to have worn that down over the years.
The scariest ride I ever had was after blagging a ride in a 997 GT2 over the mountain road (TT course) with one J Bovingdon. I think we were hitting 170 plus on the mountain mile uphill stretch (!). And this is a road I've driven over 20,000 times myself, many at three figure speeds. Oh,and there was the time a local car salesman and top local rally driver of the time,Gary Leece, took me for a run across the Round Table road in a Cossie Sapphire. I was seeking his advice on buying the car and asked if he'd check it out. It was the day before seatbelts became compulsory in the Isle of Man. He wasn't wearing his so I didn't put mine on. By the time we were doing 130mph across the twisting Round Table I couldn't even take my hands off the seat to put it on.
Yes, rallyists are a breed apart...and co drivers something else again.
Vatanen - Legend!

That is just amazing the way he positions the car and he seems to make the road seem so wide, just such an awesome talent behind the wheel, enjoyed that thanks.
I haven't watched that video for a couple of years and I'd forgotten just how epic it is. Easily the best on-board video I've seen. Remarkable, humbling talent.

Top level circuit drivers : Mere mortals.

Top level rally drivers : Driving gods.

All looks spiffing until you get to 1.12 and see the fresh air drops. A parachute might be in order, and your clothes would most likely be out of fashion by the time you hit the bottom.

And let's not forget that Clio would've had the build integrity of a crisp packet ......

The above too light ? too dry ? too grippy ?

I share the opinion that rally drivers have something seriously wrong with them.

I've managed to find a tree at high speed on a race track and been grateful to hobble away from it, to habitually entertain the risk of repeating the experience (as no doubt every rally driver must have done it at least once) makes me think that the car control part of their brain has overwritten their sense of self preservation in the same way as it overwrites the social skills part of the brain in most circuit racers hehe
