This is Matt we're talking about. He probably had his first tweed suit when he was 4.

I don't like private plates like a don't like tattoos, it's like trying to make a personal statement to others out there, but that's just me (which is a statement in itself lol) so if you want a plate go and get one.

Irish plates used as 'private' plates is council as fk, typically prefixed BAZ or GAZ. Do not do. Given your apparent desperation to portray the image of a 'country gent', this is a question that never should have been asked in the first place.

The only time I'd get a private plate, is if I had an usual car, that doesn't have a front bumper / rear recess that fits regular sized number plates and I needed a smaller number plate. Private plates work in countries where you can actually have a decent combination, like America.

Wow, Piston Heads is a hostile place sometimes. I don't really have much advice beyond if you want one, then get one - if you don't, then don't.

PH seems to exhibit a number of inbuilt snobberies. Private plates seem to act as a lightning rod for these. I have a private plate with my father's initials. I inherited if from him; he owned it decades. Does that make me a Chav? - Possibly, in the strange world of PH.

This seems to be a widely held view - even to the point that having one makes a car more difficult to sell. It baffles me a bit, but I have seen it repeatedly.

It's not so much the vanity plate issue but who raised the thread. A serial attention we.

And anyway. The only people who get all sensitive about it are those with embarrassingly sad plates.

"It's my initials"
Yeah. And only you know. Brilliant.
"It's unique"
Yeah. So is the one that come with it originally.
"It hides the age of the car"
Right. Do you lie about your age too?
"It spells "Sexy""
"AU54 3YY" doesn't spell sexy."
"I've never had lots of money but I see people with lots of money and I feel left out"
Bless.
"It gives the impression I'm wealthy and successful"
What. That £350 plate?"

hehe
I'm jo5in6 of course.

Matt - Congratulations on the RR. I'm of the opinion that the L322 RR is the pinnacle of modern car design. It's just perfect. Enjoy it.

I'm afraid I would be against an NI numberplate - I just don't like the way they look. I just assume that car has been bought in NI or is visiting. I have a prefix numberplate which has appeared on a few of my cars. It's a combination of my first initial and the pronunciation of my last name - but more importantly it was an 18th gift from my parents - I love it because of that and I don't think I'd have bought one myself.

Alternative idea... get a normal older registration plate. Just buy something like T997 MJD (random DVLA search for available numbers) and stick that on it. It will mess with people's heads biggrin

I had an NI plate on my car when I bought it as the previous owner hadn't had the chance to transfer it. Didn't really bother me, but I a few people did mention it was a bit 3.14key.

I've now got a shorter private plate (was given it when my dad bought a car with it included). The style is XX XXX and I think it looks better than the XXXX XXX style plate the car came with. Don't think I'd have actually paid for one though.

The "landed gentry" are either rich enough that they just buy a proper private plate, or so rich that they simply don't give a fk what the peasants think biggrin

Just enjoy the car and keep the £300 for the fuel/repair fund.
The landed gentry are usually running the plate that was fitted to the Rolls Royce that their great grandfather bought in 1922. They're also sitting in his furniture too.
They'll also have either a lovely old soft dash rangie or a current model. An oiled canvas jacket helps, also.

I know an alarmingly wealthy chap who has a newish RR with an 04 plate.

To make it look older? No, he has it to read OO0 4 and then his initials.

Ooh.

But I checked and OO0 4 MAT has gone.
