Leasing a new Golf which gets delivered on Monday. Last minute decision to go for the DSG instead after driving one and liking it - not the debate in this topic!

I've just gone to insure it and found the DSG is £540 compared to £410 for the manual. Has anyone else had this same issue?

i'm 33 with 9 years NCD, no points

I think the DSGs are slightly more to insure. It was when I did my Leon 184 DSG. Luckily with a Quidco cashback, it only cost me £165 for the year with the same age/NC amount.

Are you whining over £130 a year?

No, he's not. Go to night school and study English comprehension, because yours is crap.

Easy.

Smelly poo head.

A half-hearted comment from me.

The increase in insurance cost will be because it would cost the insurer more to replace a DSG Golf than a manual Golf - all other things being presumed equal.

That would essentially be the small difference in the value of the vehicle, and it would be almost trivial to the insurance company, what is essentially at most at 10% increase in value is not going to result in a 25%+ increase in insurance

Most likely situation is all or most of the increase has nothing to do with the change in gearbox, but has to do with this quote being done 2 days before the start date, where as previous quote would have been done perhaps a week or 2 before.
You will generally get far better quotes if you do them a couple of weeks in advance.

Have you just gone to the one insurer you got the best quote from on the manual and asked them for a quote on the DSG or is this from a comparison site?

It could be as simple as a spate of thefts or accidents in DSG GTDs in your area have pushed the loading on your car up.

I'd never though it was true that you'd get better deals by arranging your insurance far in advance, but I just did two quotes and it seems it is. One was to start tomorrow, one in 30 days time. The one starting in 30 days was at least 10% cheaper. How bizzare.

How can you say that? All we know is his car, age, bonus and zero points. He might live in the middle of London, do high mileage, be a mincab driver, have an 19 y/o wife as an additional driver or any other number of factors.

Easy, I just said it!

Yes, I know we don't have ALL the details but the ones indicated would generally give a low premium. He hasn't mentioned anything untoward that would bump it like a DD offence. I'm guessing location may be an issue.

I have a GTI PP DSG, and although the premium is the lowest I've ever had for a car, it was more than a manual when I looked at the comparion sites. I don't remember the difference, but like you, OP, it didn't sway my decision. smile

I have a Mk 7 GT DSG, never got a quote on a manual and of course the GTD is a little faster and we don't know your circumstances - but I'm paying around £270/year and that's to see out my existing policy with a new one coming in from £200 or so online.

I'd be doing some comparisons and phoning around.

Maybe there is just something strange with my combination of circumstances. I've been through the standard online comparison sites and rang a few companies direct.

I initially thought it was the quote age but even ringing through an insurer e.g. LV and asking them to just change the gearbox and re-run the quote has exactly the same effect. + 15-2

Last time, the call centre person put me on hold for about 10 minutes while checking with the "technical team" as she had never seen such a big increase....

Like I said, maybe I am unfotunate and someone down the road has written off a few DSGs recently! Good to hear nobody else has had the issue - gives me more leverage for negotiation so thanks for your feedback

And to the guy who said I was moaning over £130. To most people this is not an insignicifant amount of money. Lucky for you if it is.
