Gales is addressing the number of dealers. Bahar had the bright idea of getting rid of most of them and then inviting them to make massive capital investment to get back on board.

Every premium car vendor knows they must get their car parked up at key locations and be seen. Everyone except Lotus.
This is exactly how the Esprit was chosen for a starring role in the Bond films back in the mid-1970s. They do know this stuff, they've just forgotten to implement it.
Good point. The chap parked it up outside the studio didn't he?

The E Type they only sold them to certain people to begin with and many car brands work hard to subtly ensure their car is parked round the back of Harrods etc. It may seem vulgar but it's really important. London is a global capital. It is full of some of the wealthiest people on the planet, it is catagorically full of vast amounts of fast and easy money, aspirations and most importantly for Lotus, young men earning way above the global average and also a desire to spend very heavily.

And yet the only Evora I've seen in London was a bright yellow one tucked in the corner of an industrial estate car park by Staples Corner.

Lotus should have half a dozen pottering around London, passing through key points such as Picadilly Circus, the Square Mile, Knightsbridge, Chelsea and Mayfair every weekend. They probably wouldn't even have to pay people just run competitions etc.

Interestingly the Evora 400 US price has been announced at the same time. It's $89,900. That equates a fraction over 58k GBP today.

At 72k (GBP), the US RRP would be a whopping $111,553, but given the ZO6 Stingray has a $79k base price, 650bhp and does 29mpg, I guess Lotus is being realistic and has opted for very slim margins on US sales.

The U.S. price is pitched between the Carrera and Carrera S, is it not?

Lotus release a new car & we're worrying about cruise control as a £300 option! Porsche don't have it as standard either & it's about the same cost on a 911 & a Cayman. I'd argue, if you can afford a £72k you can afford £300 cruise control too & maybe get a dealer discount will should cover it.

Can we talk about how it drives or the performance? Or would we prefer to talk about how good a tow car it'll make?

So it's the same price there. US price does not include sales tax and ours includes 20% VAT.

Having said that, Pretty Woman, Basic Instinct and other movies featured later Esprits. The Evora and has been slathered over in Desperate Housewives while a handful of shiny chrome examples were in the movie The Host.
Admittedly not a blockbuster list, but a definite start.

The current Evora brilliantly combines the comfort of the best GT, but also has the handling precision and response of the best sports cars.

No I do not work for Lotus.

I love all sports cars, especially the current
Lotus range, but you do wonder what The future is for cars of this type with the iPod generation?

But sales tax in the US is typically around 6 percent. And a handful of states have no sales tax.

I, too, noticed this difference in UK / US pricing. It's not a negligible difference, considering that the car is shipped across an ocean and requires non-UK fitment and documentation.

Maybe the US car is offered at a lower "base" spec?

And maybe, as Jellinek says, Lotus accept a slimmer margin in the US. Presumably Lotus could then make up the difference via volume of units sold?

I'm glad they're still trading!

yes I completely agree. If I was to write down how I want each aspect of a car to feel, it would be a very long and detailed list, but it would be epitomised by the current Lotus range. To give a balanced and honest view, I confess that the throttle response in the Evora leaves a little to be desired and the weight distribution of most current Lotuses is a bit rearward for my liking, but everything else on that huge list is pretty much bang on with the current Lotus range. I can't think of another road car I've driven that ticks even a third of that imaginary list.

Lotuses also continue to get better; whilst many road cars have the mk1 considered the best (Impreza, MX5 etc), or a particular model, every single Lotus I drive trumps the last one.

Combine the above two facts and I'm sure that the Evora 400 will be sensationally good smile

find a Lotus dealer lol that's hard enough as it is !

closest to me is the small unit in Silverstone which is always cold ! and the show room can hold all of 2 cars !!! (or is it 3) you get the point any way.

Doubt there is another within 60 odd miles all round.

A new one has just opened in Henley on Thames a few miles from Reading. Its called Hoffmans. Very nice dealership with a big showroom. Hoffmans have been going for over 20 years.

New one just opened in London too.

BTW I have been very impressed by Siverstone. Customer service is good, friendly, down to earth and you can chat to the technicians while they service your car. Personally I prefer than to a real shiny Porsche dealership but each to their own. I also like Porsches to and would love a GT3 or GT4 too!

Lotus Dealer network is growing fast so choices are there.

I have sat in an Evora 400 at Geneva Motorshow and it looks impressive so we'll see how it drives.

It all helps but I suspect they have to pay for the pleasure.

Every weekend an army of hobbyists decent on London and video fast cars then post the videos online. Getting a few cars moving around Town is a very low cost way of getting the product into the minds of those who will talk about it and spread the word etc.

Lotus and porsche aren't comparable, and I have no idea why they keep being mentioned together. Lotus is a car enthusiast vehicle, and porsche is something you spec for the wife as a reliable kids to school car.

For any of you that doubt this go to any private school around kicking out time and just watch.

One will require a reasonably well stocked garage of tools and some knowledge of car mechanics, and the other simply won't. One has a certain status to it and the other woudn't be recognised by most joe public.

There would never be a conversation in the porsche forum about whether cruise control was required or not.

I simply can't see how anyone could be such a blank page when going to buy a car that they would include both makes in their possibilities list.

On a more personal note, one coined the term 'bug ugly'because if its roots and the other is quite pretty.

The new London dealer, Hexagon Classics (http://hexagonclassics.com/lotus/) is a long term Porsche dealer that has just signed up to offer the Lotus range. So, in their mind at least, the two marques can exist side by side.

The interesting thing is that in the various interviews Hexagon have implied that they're expecting some very exciting announcements from Lotus. Whether that's just referring to the launch of the Evora 400, or models beyond that is not clear, but their enthusiasm for Lotus seems a very positive sign.

When I go and pick my daughter up from the private school she attends, noone is looking at the vast array of Porsches in the car park. It's my rather pretty '99 S1 Elise that's drawing the attention wink

There's a new one opening in Nottingham in the next few months - I've had a guided tour around it (still being built) and it's going to be bloody massive.
Interactive displays, racing cars on show etc.

I like what Gales is doing.

For me lotus is now an aspirational brand since the introduction of the evora. It represents quality, style, performance and many other attributes I find desirable in a sports car. Yes they got and continue to get marketing wrong and I agree that needs to be addressed but as a desirable sports car I love the evora.
