had this with my Cayenne Turbo. Got to the point where it was border not viable to fix what needed fixing so just px'd it for about £1500 less than I paid for it 9 months earlier.

I took that as not a bad deal when the bill for the items I knew about was going to be £4.5k.

Stuck my old Passat on ebay, made sure the faults were listed. Had a few offers within 24 hours and she was picked up (and shipped to Eastern Europe I suspect) by the next weekend.

Comically frank description and 99p start price with no reserve on eBay. You'll be surprised how merciful the market is.

Don't panic and be tempted to end the sale early though; it all happens in the last ten minutes.

p.s. even mentioning 'sell your car' websites always suggests to me someone wants to sell a car with zero effort
Nothing wrong with that IMHO. Sometimes as a seller that's exactly what you want.
I guess it depends how much you value your time - selling a car to 'wehalfanyoffer' is basically giving-away at least £500 and more likely £1K+ - if running a few ads, taking some calls and texts and haggling with someone isn't worth that to you, by all means don't do it.

Another reason to use these places to when you know your car is about to go bang but it's not really obvious - but even then you're just insulating yourself from an angry buyer with zero recourse against you - and you're paying for that.

In other news - the 'too many owners' thing is like the 'over 100K' thing, it only scares-off people who know nowt about cars - the same people who'll quibble that the plate isn't special or the tyres aren't blacked.

A lot of owners in a short period can be a warning of niggly or annoying issues of course - but < 1-owner-per-year is no issue on any car - always bearing-in-mind that dealers often didn't re-register cars so the actual number could be WAY higher anyway! smile

I'm actually just-as-way as cars with few owners - because if one of the few was a cheapskate or abusive, that car has taken more of a beating...

Mine is absolutely mint, priced sensibly, FSH, warrantied and it still does not sell.
Either it's a niche model/example, and therefore has a tiny target market; or one of those things isn't true.

I'm willing to bet it's price.

eBay seems like a good shout but personally, I wouldn't want to let go of it for less than £2k.

If the auction ends at something ridiculous like £400 do I still have to sell?

Most people mentioned no reserve, which is why I ask.

Its a niche car, a V10 BMW.

What about traditional car auctions? See a lot of stuff that is ropey as hell go through at strong money.

For proper scrap stuff I just scrap it now (www.removemycar.co.uk is good) rather than selling as spares/repair, less money but far less hassle

Personally I would find the bits on eBay and spend an afternoon tidying the car up. Headlight washer cover and wheel arch liner can't total more than £50 on eBay surely? Sorting those will open up the market a bit.

Well, why are you surprised then? If it's a niche car (with a fantastic, exotic engine), the audience is small and it's going to take time to sell unless you are prepared to lower the price.

It's a fairly straightforward relationship...

I am surprised because it is a highly desirable car that is mint and has a comprehensive warranty on it.

If it was an overpriced dog with patchy history and no warranty I would take your point.

All that jazz

Had a guy from the arse end of the country contact me to buy my Astravan because he'd seen a pic of it on here from like a year ago and it's in a rare colour which he wants. Many emails back and forth telling him absolutely everything he wanted to know about it and more and he was still keen for it. Went and got it detailed to look its best and sent him up to date pics. It's 5 year old, has done 107k and has been used as a van, but the bodywork is excellent as it's been well looked after. After seeing the pics he comes back to me with "nah, I think I'll leave it because the plastic bootliner has too many scratches on it and it's done too many miles" - I kid you not - on a van, with 107k rolleyes. He then sent me another email wanting to know why I'd not replied to this. rolleyes

I had this recently with my old fiesta finesse. It was on gumtree for 2 weeks and had many views. The car had the abs light on, wasn't in the best of condition but did have a full service history. It ended up selling for £700 and I felt like I had won a watch. The buyer didn't care about the condition or light as long as it ran well.

Put your car on gumtree and I'm sure someone will come out the bushes. A lot of people buying a car at that price only really care about how it is mechanically. Spend £20 at your local scrappy and buy the parts it requires.

My uncle once couldn't sell his motorbike. So he buried it in the garden.

You may need a bigger hole though.

obviously not desirable to many people, otherwise it would have sold!

What's the car OP ?

You've described it in separate posts as an E46 and a V10.

BMW didn't do one of those.
