I'm incredulous that they will not deal with the VAT. Most private/PCP Users won't be able to recover VAT and you Insurer damn well can. I'd ferk them over with a complaint/FOS complaint.
The insurer will not be able to recover the VAT.

Insurers use an exemption to avoid having to charge VAT on premiums. This means that they cannot recover VAT any related costs.

You do know the vast majority of the time autoglass don't use genuine oem parts? They are essentially aftermarket parts?

As for the quality of aftermarket screens/windows that has discussed quite a bit online.

Write it off to experience.
Interesting to know what the difference in actual quality is. massive price differential.

As you correctly say, log this one to experience and move on!!

I doubt the after market windscreen could be as bad as Mercedes. After all it was the Mercedes part which shattered all on its own. The Germans seem to be wonderful at making extremely expensive yet unreliable products.

Yet somehow the general population seem to have been brainwashed to believe that they are "tanks", "bulletproof" etc. I can't fathom it. They are all very average, with the exception of Porsche.

Yes and as I discovered while in conversation with the dealer who took the opportunity to sell me a new car, it has devalued in 18 months and 14,000 miles by exactly 50%

Yet my Mercedes W124 coupe, hasn't missed a beat in 3 years I've had it (coming up to 180k miles) 25 years old and still had the original exhaust until a couple of months ago, even then it just needed a new backbox. The only parts it's needed in that time were a dizzy cap and arm.

They're going through what - being diplomatic - I can only describe as a transitional period: all branches shut down to make them a mobile business.

I think you made a major error of judgement in not getting a quote for Mercedes first - suspect that limits your complaint options somewhat

This sounds like comparing old school vw to their current efforts. They don't build them like that anymore

Im getting quite confused here, £400 wouldnt surprise me for a Mercedes rear screen but seems rather excessive for a drop glass. A heated drop glass, first Ive ever heard off, and if it was a drop glass why would a wiper arm come into it and why would it require a £50 tube of bonding sealant. Autoglass since they became a mobile service have had huge waiting times and since they are very much a quick fit company, if it is a heated drop glass its probably quite an involved job to replace and they maybe didnt want the job anyway.
