It was a straight 4...in a Simca, Christ it was horrid rattled like a bag of spanners.

Oh and another straight 4TDI this time...in my Scirocco when it blew up I didn't care much for that one either.

T Twin, the ones in Harleys, never ridden one, I just have an aversion to Harleys and the engine enables people to ride them, only acceptable if you wear a back patch with "MC" on and its made of various bits of other bikes and you have no other transport.

+1 my MK3 escort had a carbed one of these. It made 79hp from 1.6L and managed to be gutless and thirsty at the same time. Truly awful.

It was the first engine that came to my mind too but I remember owning 4 of the things, 3 Escort (2 x mk3, 1 x mk4) and a Fiesta. Actually technically I owed 5 after I swapped the 1.3 for a 1.6 in one of the Escorts!

Hard to think of a worse production engine in recent memory than the CVH in all honesty. Worked well with a turbo strapped to it, and was just about acceptable in something really light where you didn't need to work it, but I still associate the 1.4 in a mk5 Escort as the nastiest, most miserable powertrain it has been my misfortune to encounter. Gutless unless thrashed, when it was slightly less gutless, but sounded like it was in agony, and set up a horrible high frequency buzz that caused the interior fittings to vibrate even in a 2,000 mile old car. Also the one I had over a weekend did 26 mpg! Utter crap.

+1 I had one of these too before the Escort. My first car was a 1.3 Talbot Horizon with the same engine as the Alpine. Coarse, rattly and gutless.

It's because of these monstrous things that I now have a supercharged V8!

Vauxhall / Opel 2.0 CDTi 2009 - 2010?
Utter bag of st. DMF, camshaft, crank issues. All of which they deny.

Vauxhall V6 as fitted to the Omegas etc worth a dishonourable mention.

Leaky rocker box covers, seizing oil filter brackets, plastic tensioners prone to breaking, oil prone to mixing with coolant. Apart from putting out reasonable power and being smooth, if you had a bad one ( as I did ) they're a nightmare.

Ford CVH, the worst engine ever.

Now and again I'll be walking along and instantly recognise a CVH coming up, sounds like a rough diesel about to let go......

Worst four pot: GM (Vauxhall/Opel etc) 1.4 Ecotec.

- No torque low down
- Not much more in mid-range
- And not a lot at the top end either
- Coarse and noisy
- Lousy economy
