The horrible 1.4 engine in my mates old 2003 Megane, did him a "favour" by dropping him and his missus at Gatwick to go on their hols and in return I could use it for the two weeks as my car was off the road at the time.

I reverted to walking after 4 days as that engine in that car was shocking. So underpowered.

Ungrateful git I know.

Vauxhall's 1.0 12v 3 Cyl. Was horrific, like a sewing machine. Suzuki's 1.0 was equally terrible but it seemed a bit quicker

The 1.2 engine in 2008-ish Corsas. I've had two as hire cars, both sounded like something was terminally wrong with them and both had done less than 6000 miles.

The rest of the cars were bloody awful too.

The K series may be a delicate little thing when abused but it's great when it's working. Unlike several of the other nominations which are just unremittingly awful even when working as designed.

Life racing?
The Life was a W12, 3 banks of four cylinders, doesn't alter the fact that it was indeed, a dog! laugh

My nomination is the 2.4 litre 5 pot Volvo lump, a harsh, unrefined gutless turd of an engine.

Huh? The Volvo I5 is a great engine! Certainly not harsh and unrefined! A bit underpowered and thirsty though.

My vote goes to the Ford 2.0 Diesel because it's such a rough unrefrined engine. Makes anything it is in sound like a van.

Isn't the VAG W12 four banks of three (two V6s stuck together).

2 years ago took the lease car in for a service,
gave me a Astra as a loaner.

I had to ask when i took it back what it a petrol or a diesel (I read the key and it said 1.4 petrol but I didnt belive it)
the car had all the down sides of a NA diesel, gutless, wouldnt rev but with the semi quite of a petrol.
total crap.
it just reaffermed my alergy for all Opel/Vauxhalls

By far the worst engine ever to make it into a car was the 2.0 8 valve petrol VW lump from around 1997 it was so awful it's hard to believe they actually had the cheek to put it in a golf and call it a gti. It made a 1.3 escort feel swift.

The late 1980s Ford 1.3 OHV was probably the Kent derived Valencia unit, but there were also CVHs too. At least on the OHV you could fix the tappets. No such luxury with the CVH. Horrible uncharismatic things, but at least those engines worked though, unlike contemporary Leyland / Rover engines which seemed to be designed with 1940s technology and oil burning from day 1.

I had a Brera 1.9 JTD hire car for five days a few years ago. That engine was a gutless, rough, hateful thing.

Will Cerb4.5Lee's nomination for 'the worst V8 ever' be the S65B40 (as installed in the E90/2/3 M3) ?

I think he's fine with the engine, less so the mass it has to deal with...

And i nomiate the engine that is in MX5 mk1. HORRIBLE coarse engine.. that screamed pain when you revved it.
Was it broken? Mine wasn't the smoothest thing around but it had a cheeky burble to it and was very eager to rev.

British Leyland 1750 engine found in the Austin Maxi . "E" series? Slow, gutless, thirsty, sounded dreadful, could not Rev to save its life; and still at the time, I loved it.

Until I killed it by trying to treat it like a GTI rather than a 3 bed roomed Victorian terraced house which it wanted to be.

The joy of first cars. Still, the engine really was crap. And the gearbox made the engine seem impressive, but that is a different thread....
