engines - crappiest of them all ?
Discussion
The horrible 1.4 engine in my mates old 2003 Megane, did him a "favour" by dropping him and his missus at Gatwick to go on their hols and in return I could use it for the two weeks as my car was off the road at the time.
I reverted to walking after 4 days as that engine in that car was shocking. So underpowered.
Ungrateful git I know.

Rover K series??
(Runs away before the Rover fanboys retaliate in force)
The K series may be a delicate little thing when abused but it's great when it's working. Unlike several of the other nominations which are just unremittingly awful even when working as designed.(Runs away before the Rover fanboys retaliate in force)

My nomination is the 2.4 litre 5 pot Volvo lump, a harsh, unrefined gutless turd of an engine.
Huh? The Volvo I5 is a great engine! Certainly not harsh and unrefined! A bit underpowered and thirsty though. My nomination is the 2.4 litre 5 pot Volvo lump, a harsh, unrefined gutless turd of an engine.
My vote goes to the Ford 2.0 Diesel because it's such a rough unrefrined engine. Makes anything it is in sound like a van.

2 years ago took the lease car in for a service,
gave me a Astra as a loaner.
I had to ask when i took it back what it a petrol or a diesel (I read the key and it said 1.4 petrol but I didnt belive it)
the car had all the down sides of a NA diesel, gutless, wouldnt rev but with the semi quite of a petrol.
total crap.
it just reaffermed my alergy for all Opel/Vauxhalls

The late 1980s Ford 1.3 OHV was probably the Kent derived Valencia unit, but there were also CVHs too. At least on the OHV you could fix the tappets. No such luxury with the CVH. Horrible uncharismatic things, but at least those engines worked though, unlike contemporary Leyland / Rover engines which seemed to be designed with 1940s technology and oil burning from day 1.
British Leyland 1750 engine found in the Austin Maxi . "E" series? Slow, gutless, thirsty, sounded dreadful, could not Rev to save its life; and still at the time, I loved it.
Until I killed it by trying to treat it like a GTI rather than a 3 bed roomed Victorian terraced house which it wanted to be.
The joy of first cars. Still, the engine really was crap. And the gearbox made the engine seem impressive, but that is a different thread....
