Still too many exhausts.
I think it's time we got over that. It won't be difficult or expensive to ditch them in favour single pipes, if so desired. It's just one silencer with 4 outlets after all.
Idiot question here - Are multi exhausts/outputs like in the R ever really needed?
No, no road car actually needs exhausts that big. On the whole, performance cars need bigger outlets because their more powerful engines need to expel exhaust gases at a quicker rate, because they produce more. But no car needs exhausts like the designs you see today, they're largely trim pieces.

Take a closer look down a Murcielago SV's massively wide exhaust and you'll see the real story...

Yeah it's just a styling and pecking order thing. Audi did that with the MK1 TT. They made it very clear who bought the cheap skate model by removing one of the tail pipes! Cheeky feckers.

As for shifting spent gases, I had a modified Corrado pushing 400hp through a single 2.5" tailpipe smile

I bet the Golf R 400 will be comfortably over £40k with a couple of options. I guess the question is, will it be in limited numbers and will it be depreciation free for the first couple of years due to its rarity? They will ask for huge premiums to get one...

I like the look of the clubsport, the R or R400 don't really interest me.

The people who claim to be "in the know" (sport auto) say that the GTI Clubsport 40th anniversary edition will get the same engine internals as the Golf R. Additional gains north of 100 bhp with just a remap should be no problem. Putting that kind of power on the road with in FWD car on the other hand... I'm sure that fancy LSD will get quite a workout.

Oh and by the way, the people who have heard the car run around the track say it definitely sounded like a 5-cylinder engine.

Who knows the throaty sound of the five-cylinder Audi and VW models, knows when he hears it. So our reliable ear witnesses at the Nürburgring, as the youngest Golf R prototype made his rounds. Who together counts 1 and 1, here has heard and seen the new Golf R420.

The more I hear about it the more i suspect it may simply be a RS3 with a Golf body, positioned as a very, very expensive halo car. 5-cylinder engine, wavy brakes, etc...

Hot hatches are still the practical choice they are now getting as fast as super cars and you can still do the weekly shopping I keep dreaming of owning a super car but I would hardly use one it's hard getting away from these practical fast hatches they tick all the boxes.

What he said, my 310bhp supercharged toy only has a single working exhaust exit, and not a particularly big one at that. Granted that VW in that pic has 400bhp, but that wouldn't account for a 4 fold increase. I think as said, it's for show, to indicate the immense power etc. etc.

I like the Golf R, but I really don't get the point of the 400. 400hp or not, its still a relatively dull four cylinder engine in a car that will in all likelihood be very much the same to drive as the already brilliant standard R. I'd sooner have less power and the more interesting engine of the Audi RS3. The clubsport should make even less sense but I love the idea.
Completely agree regarding the R. Another 100bhp would certainly make it quicker but it will take a lot more than that to make it an interesting driving experience. Counting the days 'til the end of my lease at the mo.

No. Same as no one needs a 400bhp hatchback for the road.

Wow. Not noticed that before.

My neighbour has a Golf R with many exhausts and I think a pair of wider exhausts would look classier than the 4 he has....

It's just a marketing indicator for the general public who equate "number of exhaust exits" with "sporty".
