I have an 'amg sport' diesel coupe. Its sportier (big engine, bigger wider wheels, spoiler, body kit, wider track, different suspension/brakes) than a lot of other marques 'sport' models but its certainly no AMG.
Precisely, and it isn't meant to be.
But certain people will think it is, its marketing.

I can imagine the heated argument just before that shot...

"I told you. Now shut the censored up and smile. I'm going to enjoy the rest of the drive in peace and quiet"

That pic has so much comedy potential, it just makes no sense.

It's both. There are genuine improvements there to braking, steering, and handling. Marketing is involved where sales of any vehicle is concerned.

That Lexus CT200H thing. Its got an F-sport model. I think its actually slower than the Prius with which it shares its drive train.

All "S Line", "M Sport" and "AMG Line" models.
Absolute nonsense. Taughter suspensions with altered geometry and sway bars; wider tires; upgraded brakes; faster steering racks; and a set of proper seats and other trimmings all add up to a sportier package than the base models.
That's right. Nothing says sports car to me like a diesel saloon with all the unnecessary trinkets and nothing in the way of actual performance.
I guess we're then down to the definition of 'sport', which is a matter of opinion. 'M Sport' is a completely different suspension package to the standard car that's developed on the Nurburgring to give a bias towards handling over comfort; you get different springs, dampers and geometry (and ARBs?). The controversy that Jacobyte alludes to is that unlike most manufacturers, BMW don't just allow you to fit it to their fastest models, you can have a 116d M Sport if you like (in fact I drove one last year!).

I can see both sides of the argument to be honest, although I'm firmly on the side of handling and cornering rather than performance defining a sports car, because motorsport, at least in the UK, is all about cornering and lap times, not straight line speed. I don't even know what the top speed of my sports car is, or any of the cars that I've raced, and in my eyes a Formula Ford 1600 is just as much a racing car as a Formula 3 car in my eye.

I also think it's rather cool that BMW allow you to buy a car that has its handling uprated, but is more affordable to buy and run (which essentially is the whole essence of the slower BMW models, they allow you to enjoy decent handling without forking out for a big thirsty engine you may never use fully). If I had my say, we'd have 1.1 Renaultsport Clios, 1.4 litre Civic Type Rs and other such cars; what a superb idea! On that note, surely the Peugeot 106 Rallye was more sporty than the standard 106 that had the same engine? Isn't that the same as a 116 MSport vs a 116?...

I think it'd be quicker to list the cars with "sport" in their name which are sporty. Genuinely sporty cars don't need "sport" appended to their name.

If someone says an Audi sports car what do you think? An A4 S-Line or an R8 / maybe Tt at a push.

It doesn't matter what 'upgrades' the m-sport pack includes the car is not a sports car. Maybe a sportier version at a push, so perhaps that just rename it: 318d slightly sportier. Range Rover Sportier.

Thats why the AMG Sports cars or BMW m-sport cars are offenders because the cars are nothing to do with sports cars, even if they are slightly more sporty (you can read that as slightly less comfortable) than the base model.

No one said it was a sports car.

maybe I'm daft, but I thought the 'sport' in sports utility meant you could use it for doing sports, taking your mountain bike, windsurfer, skis, skateboards etc

not set a new time round McDs car park
