2x mk1 MX5s have proved to be brilliantly cheap/ reliable DD/ commuters for me, even on my hideous London commute.

1990 UK manual was swapped for an 89 Eunos auto when clutching on the North Circular got tedious.

BRG mk1 was a perfect car for me when I lived in Chiswick. It's a boring answer, but they really are spot on.

Is that Stockholm?

Looks a cracking wee car- although bloody rare in these parts.

I'd have to say looking at the other posts that 80s/90s German cars are a shout for daily retro action.

The w124 and e34 in particular just take it in their stride, and both have good part supply and owner support via fora.

What counts as retro?

My daily driver is 15 years old, and is used for a daily work commute, general pottering about, trips into the Cotswolds and motorway trips back home. Next month it will be doing a nice road trip from Aylebury to Hull, to Cairnryan, to Portstewart and back following the same route.

If everyone was to have 5k to spend on a retro daily driver, what would people go for?

The car would be used for work commutes, the very rare motorway trip and the weekends away.

Im just interested to see if anyone is doing this currently and if any one has any issues?

or what would people go for if they could!!
Old cars need a bit of tlc on a regular basis, so I'd spend less than the 5k and have a fettling/fixing fund left over.

E30 325i cabriolet for me. Had one for 4-5 years as a daily - rain, snow and sun, as well as multiple trips back and forth to Scotland and a Euro holiday jaunt. Good (rust free!) examples used to be available for around 2.5k. I understand, values are on the up however.

Had the roof down as much as possible and never once had any abuse directed my way (doesn't provoke 'flash sports car hate'). In heavy rain, the roof occasionally leaked. There were a few foibles but that's part of the 'character' of an old car.

Worth considering imo. smile

Maybe not as old as some here but I'm going to have to hake my 2013 Land Rover out for a spin because it hasn't turned a wheel in weeks. I hope the attery is OK.

My X reg MGF however needs a good wash. Since April it's been in daily use.

I think if you are going for an older daily, it's best to buy on condition/service history. Expect hefty bills. They are not guaranteed but if you expect them you are prepared.

So far ones that interest me...

Merc 190 / Bmw e30/e34
Saab 900
Fiat Barchetta
MX5

however they are all common retro daily drivers, (Apart from the fiat) is there anything out there that throws that trend?

porsche 924?
Skyline?
Golf mk1/2?
205 gti?

I used a 190 Cosworth to commute for about 18 months. It was fine really. 25mpg, had a few issues to begin with but once they were sorted it was great.

I am in the process of buying a 1990 XJS that is currently being used as a daily by the owner, & when I collect it in a couple of weeks I will also be using it as a daily.

It is a 3.6 manual though so I am not completely mental!

Well the current owner has used it as a daily for the last year & while he has replaced some parts that was just prudent maintainence & hasn't broken down or left him stranded.
Also I don't do a lot of miles & I intend to keep it in at least as good condition as it is now. Previous dailys of mine have included a '98 XJR & a 4.7 litre tuned TVR Chimaera.
