RE: The problem with Porsches: Tell Me I'm Wrong
Discussion
I disagree with you Mr Dan,and this is why, to say that the Porsches are too good is like saying that woman is too good looking, there is no such thing and for man to say this he must need to question his own grasp on reality!
For me 973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is the ultimate and every other Porsche before and after are variations of a Supermodel (except maybe 914 and the 924 okay and maybe 986). Would you not to at least dip your oil stick into a Super model at least once? Any man who says no is either a mental or French (this is banter do not be offended if you are mental or French).
For me they are like Supermodel mistress even a bad one is way better than the wife!!!!!

This is a great idea! We need a 200bhp, mid-engined flat four Porsche. It should be capable of circa 40 mpg, weigh 1000-1200kg, have 225 tyres at the back and 205's at the front, 17-18 inch wheels, the option to have no power steering and be priced at £30k. Think original 914 mixed with Toyota's GT86 ethos. i.e. small power, small tyres and relative lack of weight. It could even be called the 914 Spyder!
They had that in the pipeline. The project was never given the green light because Porsche decided that it would devalue the brand too much. So they built an Audi Q5-based SUV....http://www.carscoops.com/2014/06/porsche-entry-lev...
http://www.carscoops.com/2014/12/porsche-718-baby-...
Instead they will simply drop the 2.0L and 2.5L flat four into the 981.2 and rebrand it as 718, just without the originally planned lower weight/dimensions and price.

I 'get it' perfectly, however I have yet to drive a Porsche I have liked and I have driven a few over the past 10 years or so.
Yet to drive a Porsche you like? I question if possibly you were in an accident and suffered brain damage (this is just my banter do not be offended) a Porsche is like a extremely beautiful woman you have in bed with you, even if she lays there like a carp doing nothing, just enjoy the experience and if you like the comfort of your fat ugly wife better , then you can enjoy her for rest of your life but for now take in the beauty that God has given you, have your way and stop complaining her hip bones are digging into you!smilo996 said:
Having driven 2 different generations of 911, it seems that from the end of the air cooled era to the very modern cars the actual performance of the car was very much inferior to the marketing. Those cars often driven by people having a mid life crisis and "winner" types. perhaps the demographic has now changed.
There is something beautiful about the older air cooled cars, especially when given the correct level of attention that Singer give them and the level of attention Porsche should have given them if not attached to a high volume car maker. They are a case of less being more.
This years car just seems to revert to the bigger everything of the initial turbo cars. Yet more and larger wings, even wider track and more horses. Additionally though the really hideous front now has ears and a smile.
In terms of performance they are clearly hugely competent but in terms of looks just really uninspiring. The 911's do not even sound special. I would rather have a car that was both competent and beautiful than one that was just competent. The 458 has elegant vents, the 911 slashes from a spade. It uses the body to gain downforce, the 911 a couple of dinner tables. Ask Bill Clinton about competent, he has a wife who is clearly very competent......
I also fail to see how Porsche can churn out 911's for the prices they do without the full and unequivocal subsidizing effect of VW. This is also a consideration regarding price / performance.
The competition is also getting much closer. The 911 has never had any direct competition, due in large part to the price. However When Merc bring out an AMG GT Black, Jag an F Type RS, McLaren really start to pile on the pressure and Aston a new generation much more of the shine will rub off Porsche. Unbelievably, Lotus also seem closer and what if they really amazed and brought out an Esprit.
Porsche, no matter what anyone tries to argue is now more so than for many years a VW badge. Cayenne's and Macca's are much the same as the Cosworth versions of cars they were given, the Cayman and Boxter are now made by VW - though the purists would argue.
However given that the only advert I have seen on Pistonheads is for a Public School, the possibility of successfully criticisng the "winners" make is unlikely.
Interesting posts. Leaving the subjective bits aside, everything you say is demonstrably untrue. Porsche is enormously profitable (so needs no subsidisation from VAG) and makes all of its sports cars. There is something beautiful about the older air cooled cars, especially when given the correct level of attention that Singer give them and the level of attention Porsche should have given them if not attached to a high volume car maker. I disagree, Porsche's engineering is still very unique considering it is a part of VAG. The 991 is a completely unique platform with an unique engine, so is the Cayman/Boxster and Panamera. I do suspect that this will change with time and probably not to the advantage of the brand.
Look at the rest of VAG. Whether you buy a Golf, Seat, Skoda or Audi, you essentially get the same basic MQB platform.
The Lamborghini Huracan and R8 are rumoured to share the same five-cylinder engine as the RS3 in the future, albeit with an electric turbo for higher power output.
Sooner or later the Audi TT and Cayman will share a platform and from there it's really downhill from there IMO.

Japanese don't brag like silly westerners. They have honour, dignity and self control.
ほらをふ this is to boast The Japanese term “gomi ,” literally “rubbish,” describes people in Japan who talk about cars they dislike on social media....yes we do not boast like in west but on social media we most certainly do because it is behind a keyboard hidden!!!Gmund said:

A modern interpretation of the 914/916 would make an interesting, affordable? alternative in my opinion. They never took that one to its potential except for a handful of beefed up racing versions.

I have a Cayman GTS with PTV and the sport suspension with the super-stiff rear anti-roll bar. Too competent? It's certainly close. The brakes, despite being no bigger than a Cayman S, are certainly adequate. Steering is very good despite EPAS. Grip? That's where I disagree. It has plenty, but the super-stiff (and solid) rear anti-rollbar makes it almost as slidey as the Mazda MX-5 I had just before I got the Porsche. Especially so in the winter. Getting it to shake its hips is trivial, and big slides are nearly as easy to do as they were in the Miata.
It is however, almost "too good as a car" in everything else. It has three times the cargo capacity of an MX-5, and as much as a Toyota Camry. Despite the suspension, it's wonderfully complaint, even over harsh roads. It might jiggle around a bit, though an MX-5 or Lancer Evolution was miles worse. It's very comfortable. It's very quiet, save for the engine noise's constant invasion of the cabin space behind you. It also looks handsome, as evidenced by the reaction of neighbors, passerbys (who sometimes look behind them to get a second look), and the occasional person at a stoplight who asks what I do for a living.
Yet it's now up for sale. Though only to make room for a GT4 scheduled to arrive in less than 6 months, with its fixed back carbon fiber buckets, and removal of sound deadening from the engine bay. I expect it'll be a bit less slidey unless provoked, but overall I feel it'll be better since it'll be "a bit worse" in that its rougher around the edges.
