On the subject of vac vs drain plug, at these fast fit outfits I would much rather they use the vac method.

At least then, next time I come to drain the oil, I don't need a new sump due to the oaf at national f1 kwik or whatever it's called whacking the sump plug in too tight or cross-threading it.
Totally agree with that. I'd far rather it was vac'd out anyways as there is less chance of them cross threading the plug, something I've had more than once over the years with newer cars that have been dealer serviced.

I tend to give cars an oil change between scheduled service intervals and more than once before I had the Pela, I would go to drop the oil to discover a botch job on the sump. Great way to ruin your Saturday morning mood.

And back to the original topic.

They've been using Fuchs for over a year now. I had MOT and oil service on my X5 in my local branch in April 14 and they were using Fuchs then.

It's good oil and meets LL04, the guys did a good job with oil level dead on and no oil round the filler cap and it was about £2 more than me doing it with parts from ECP.

It did fail the MOT though on front tyres but they were changed and pass certificate issued the same afternoon on re-test.

I'd use them again.

This.

...and as a Brucie bonus the guy diagnosed foc whilst he was underneath the source of an oil leak that a local dealer wanted a day, full degrease, steam clean, angel tears etc "before I'd have a chance of saying for definite where it was sir".

I've just bashed in a few of the neighbours number plates as well as my own and they seem reasonably priced - £40 for a change on my Mk 7 Golf when Opie (who are reasonably priced anyway) want £35 for the oil.

If people have the tools, time, and capabilities to do it themselves that's fine, but they do seem reasonably priced.

Slightly O/T but how is everyone getting these cheap prices from Opie ? Twice recently i have bought oil for servicing and Amazon was significantly cheaper .

Their website clearly says this for my car:-

Some vehicles may require the sump tray to be removed in order to carry out an oil change. If required a small labour charge may apply which we will discuss and agree with you in branch before any work is carried out.

So they drain from the plug .

Taking mine there for a mid service splash & dash. If you can DIY on my Skoda in an hour you are doing well. Torx screws of various sizes to remove sump guard & stupidly placed filter to make it awkward for diyer...

I do mine myself as I use it as a chance to have a good look round underneath, the oil, filter and a sump washer costs £30 or so, usually do all three on that same day, takes 2 hours or less as time wise taking it somewhere else probably takes longer having to wait for it anyway.

I look at air filters and dont generally change them based on time, the 350Z has done 4k in its time with me, the filter is still clean.

£43 they suggest for my oil, 6 litres.
I put 6 litres of Castrol 5w30 A1 spec in mine, usually £20 for 4 litres, I buy 8 litres a time so say £30 for 6 litres.

£13 difference isn't too bad.

In my experience their branches can be a bit hit and miss. The Aberdeen lot are excellent, however others are less so.

I had them change the oil in my old Astra 2.2 and they used Fuchs stuff. Correct grade, and no problems at all. Good value too, would have been pretty much the same for my to buy the oil and filter and do it myself.

Me too - when they're doing it for me smile

I find that if your not too worried about a big brand you can save a good deal on the cost of home servicing.

I recently bought 5 Litres of ENI 5w30 fully syn API SM rated for £13 with free delivery from amazon & £4.79 for a bosch filter from ebay for my Impreza. Less than £20 for an oil sevice.

Also for my Superb 1.8T this SN rated fully syn oil for £18 .

I don't see that its worth spending double the price unless you have a real high performance car ( then I would want ester syn) or only change at 20k or similar. I go around 5/6k between changes.

I used my pela 6000 this weekend for the first time.
I reckon it got 5l out of 6 l out.

I thought I'd give it a try. It's a lot cleaner and quicker and I will use it again

If Fuchs are a reputable company, then they should be very concerned about being associated with such a disreputable one.

I have to use NT for oil changes, because I have no choice: I don't have the facilities to DIY and can't afford to have a proper garage do it, not that many will now do just an oil change.

They have been caught not changing filters and even not doing the job at all, so I now put "tell-tales" on the dipstick, filler cap and filter housing to check that they've been moved.

Every time I'm in my local NT, there is always a procession of customers coming in to complain or for work to be put right.

Then, there's the hassle of the dealing with the hard sell of all the unnecessary extra work they always find. Afterwards, there's the hassle of checking the oil level and tell-tales and checking where you've parked for a leak from a poorly tightened filter.

Avoid them if you can, trust them as far as you could spit their head office if you can't.

PS. You would probably need to remove the sump tray to get at the oil filter on most cars.

PPS. If you book and pay online, you can delete the disposal charge. It's not compulsory. I take an empty 5L container and, if they ever noticed and "got funny", I'd ask them for my old oil and take it to the council tip on the way home.

Love the rocking up with a 5l container and asking for the old oil back.

After having a look at national, and then Opie, looking at the same oil, it's £10 cheaper to have National do it, than to buy just the oil myself.
Be booking that in post remap I think!

They haven't noticed me not paying the disposal charge (it's not compulsory but the option box is ticked by default) and I haven't needed to do this yet. But I always like to have a "Plan B".

Worth an update to this thread, and I'll see if I can find one I contributed to a few weeks ago too...

National no longer use Fuchs products. They use Lukoil. Here's the oil product area:http://www.lukoil.ru/Products/business/Lubricants?wid=widagV8yDF84keYp2pRLDkNEg

No, me neither. Nor could they find my car. Or my wife's. Nor did they have any suitable oil, but they would order it in.

I'm out. Shame, because it used to be so good.

LukOil are fine, they're a Russian company but make all sort of different grades for all cars. You should be able to find something with the right spec;

Had a look at few - seem to meet a good range of specifications and manufacturer approvals.
