Yeah, a '90s Corolla or K11 Micra. Cheap to buy, cheap to tax, reliable, cheap parts.
Toyota Yaris looks like another candidate?

Depends on budget. £1500 buys a 107/C1/Aygo which would be reliable and fun to chuck about.

For driving fun, I'd be very tempted to try a Ford Puma though. Good ones can be had for under a grand, cheap parts and easy to self spanner.

Much nicer than a K11 Micra. Absolutely dirt cheap so (before anyone says it) you could even stick £300 in the bank for the very unlikely event of 6 miles a day over taxing the head gasket.

But then I am biased!

It's 3 miles and I've rented a premier space right outside the station. Works out about the same as normal space but you have to pay the annual rental in advance. I could forgo this and buy another bike (don't fancy taking the ZZR) but then I'd have all the clobber to deal with and they don't grit the roads in winter where I live.

Could get one of those 3 wheel scooters as they have storage space under the seat or just get another cheap car?

Commuting to London is a balls ache!
For exactly this reason I bought a BMW GS with storage boxes for my helmet and gloves. It has paid for itself 3 times over in parking and it is worth next to nothing so I don't get precious at all about it.
My ride is only just over a mile so I don't bother with anything above hlmet and gloves so it largely depend how you feel about that. 3 miles is probably a little more than I would want to go without full protection but I would have said that about a mile before I started doing it.

Debated the station car thing for a while, looked at a mk2 Golf GTi or mk4 2.8 4mo. Got sick of people on here telling me to walk or go on a bike too!
I used my 997 for this purpose, 1 mile each way.
In the end, life's too short, I use it little enough as it is without walking past it every day & getting into some heap of st to drive home
Worked hard enough to get it so might as well use it

Based on the cost of parking and a snotter, would the station cab company not entertain a decent price for a regular twice daily contract?

I used to have a 12 mile early morning (0530-0600hrs) train station commute.

Bought myself a petrol pug 106 1.1 in baby blue. Basically it was small enough to fit in small space which other cars could not fit in - i.e. badly parked cars, it was cheap to fix if anything went wrong or got dinged - citroen and pug parts were interchangeable, a tank of fuel lasted the best part of a month and a half, insurance and tax was nothing.

Personally i would look at something with a good heater for the early mornings when everything is iced over and heated seats, optional - heated windscreens.

My friendly, local smart repair man is coming out tomorrow to do mine so I feel a little better. People are just so careless, no need for it really.

So what snotter did you go for?
Apologies for thread resurrection, but have you thought about a smart repair insurance policy? I pay £150 a year, which covers up to £3000 worth of damage (basically 6 call outs), with a £25 excess each time.

So works out at less than £300 per year, which when compared to the cost of the annual train ticket and parking, is a pretty small percentage.

I have a 91 XR3i EFI as a station car. Great fun, tatty enough that a few extra dings don't matter. No one has ever touched it. £500 ebay special.

Job done -

Years ticket, fitted with the Homologation engine for the BTCC racers, revs to 7500rpm and sounds like an Audi Quattro - it'll be a fun 3 miles to the station - also 850's are notoriously good at low speed shunting, touch parking, shrugging off parking knocks and resisting arse holes who open their doors into them -

I personally would buy THE cheapest car with a years MOT. With a 3 mile drive, if it broke down, you can still walk so don't make the vehicle desirable in anyway, as it will be used over short journeys, get damaged and get neglected.

Worth considering. Had the car repaired by my friendly smart repair guy and I'm very pleased with the results, cannot see any sign of the repair. Cost me £100 inc paint and took him half a day to fix at my home. I've also moved parking spaces at the station so we will see what happens next.
