I've owned my Disco 4 since Feb and went to great lengths to find one with immaculate bodywork. 3 months of parking at the station and it has several marks where mongs have opened doors into it and somebody this week split the driver's side wheel arch by driving into the front of it. £150 damage to suck up. Quite pissed off and wondering what to do.

Considering buying a cheap car for train station duties. Has anyone else done this?

loads of people do. How long is your trip to the station?
Considered a bike?

Yeah I stopped taking my decent car as it was costing me a lot of money to keep repairing it. Worst one was some bd had obviously put their bag down on my boot , one of those bags with metal studs on the bottom. This left 4 through to the metal dents. They had then dragged it all the way across the boot leaving 4 deep down to the metal gouges.

It was cheaper in the end to buy, tax and insure a snotter than to keep shelling out for repairs.

It's 3 miles and I've rented a premier space right outside the station. Works out about the same as normal space but you have to pay the annual rental in advance. I could forgo this and buy another bike (don't fancy taking the ZZR) but then I'd have all the clobber to deal with and they don't grit the roads in winter where I live.

Could get one of those 3 wheel scooters as they have storage space under the seat or just get another cheap car?

Commuting to London is a balls ache!

My friendly, local smart repair man is coming out tomorrow to do mine so I feel a little better. People are just so careless, no need for it really.

So what snotter did you go for?

I was in a slightly different situation, but when the turbo seals blew on my Passat I needed a cheap little runaround asap so got one of these;

I actually became quite attached to it! It was 100% reliable and its little engine was super sweet and never used any oil even though it hadn't had an easy life. Back to basics motoring it was great smile

Lots to choose from. Probably go for petrol for very short cycle and make sure that it had a monthly blast to get everything up to temps.

Go small - Polo, Fox, etc - nice enough little cars

or big shed:

Let's face it the mpg won't be a cost issue for 3 miles wink

I bought a Daewoo Lanos for about £600 , took my kids to a driving club at weekends then used it myself during the week. Just got rid of it, about to replace with a Skoda Fabia.

The 306 has started first time every day for 18 months.I thrash it everywhere.it looks a bit weird but I can live with it.nobody looks at it twice.just failed its not on exhaust/ brakes/ tyres and an windscreen. That lot will add up to more than the car is worth. But as it has been so reliable I am going to look after it.
Something like that is relatively robust when compared to modern cars. It can keep up with traffic on my 40 mile commute.

For 3 miles I'd be tempted to cancel the parking space & buy a cheap 2nd hand pedal bike. £40-50 would probably get you something usable. Can totally understand not wanting to use it when the weather's crap or if there's a big hill in the way though

You could fit some solid rock sliders to your Disco so that the morons clout their doors into those.

Well then, the correct answer (which I appreciate you may not like) is a k11 Micra. If you only do six miles a day you could buy one for £500 that will last you the rest of your working life!

Yeah, a '90s Corolla or K11 Micra. Cheap to buy, cheap to tax, reliable, cheap parts.

I'm in the same boat. Shedscort failed its MOT on corrosion and brake lines, but like you I'm at the point where it's worth more to me to repair and keep it than to scrap it and shell out for another shed. Factoring in the change of insurance charges, loss of VED (1 month), probably travelling to get it and then sorting out any potential problems it is bound to have.

I just use the shedscort for work, people there have no respect for other cars it seems , parking is tight and the environment itself is dirty, it turned out to be the best decision I've made in ages.

OP, as heartbreaking as it is to come back and see your pride and joy damaged from some ignorant , I think the best option is something like an Escort http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000-W-FORD-ESCORT-1-6-F... for £450 off the bay with a years ticket, slap some rent on it and then when you're done, weight it in.

I've previously had a few train station cars - 1982 Fiat 127, 1996 Volvo 850 and a 1999 Alfa 166 v6. Each was between 500-600 pounds with full MOT.

Be sensible or get something a bit different. They were for a similar distance.

See what's about locally.

fking epic cars matey! My old man had one, two litre non turbo diesel, washing machine white and absolutely battered, to the extend that it was cool in it's own way. He put 240k on it before rust saw the end of it's days come MOT time. I would definitely own one if I could find one, although they are getting rarer by the day!
