Gents,

A recent purchase, when doing some (pre-purchase) investigation of value and model/engine etc I tried the DVLA website for tax and MOT status, it returned a blank - "Not Found" (or similar message). Not terribly bothersome because it has "Beta Version" all over it.

I then went to the Autotrader website and did similar (there is a form you can use to pre-fill an ad for example that will tell you what it should be) I used this to check its as advertised and got the message "This vehicle has been reported as Cat A or B" and would go no further.

I spoke to dealer and they assured me that there is likely an administrative issur and redid the H.P.I check and got it sent directly to me (for my benefit) - vehicle came back clean - dealer also spoke to DVLA to confirm issue their end.

Now with the H.P.I clear, the MOT(s) etc all present and correct and assurances from dealer I bought the car - the dealer is a specialist, very highly recommended - (its a niche car by the way) and its been glorious fun ever since........

Some weeks later I've received an email from Insurer saying the M.I.D has returned the result per Autotrader (I would assume that Autotrader also uses M.I.D to do the pre-fill function?) - that the vehicle is a Cat A or B total loss and they would like a copy of V5 and MOT.

Interestingly I've not at the V5 back from Swansea yet.......

I have spoken to both the dealer and insurer, the former has been very amenable about it and is going to follow up on my behalf (DVLA and M.I.D) and I have spoken to the latter and informed them of the situation from my end as it were.

The question is I guess - what do I do next? The H.P.I check is clear and the dealer is very well known and trusted in its field but the possibilities of difficulties in the future (insurance/possible flagging incorrectly as a write-off and problem selling in future if incorrect flagging lingers bothers me somewhat).

Advice? Anyone else had similar experience?

Edit

And now it sounds even worse written down......

Would it not have to have a VIC check to allow taxation?

Good point, it taxed fine - I did it myself (whilst at the dealers actually)

Scan letter, call dealer, tell them you're emailing a copy of what you received to them and they can call you back in a day or two when they've had chance to figure out what involvement they'd like in this

That's basically what I've already done.

Not for a Cat A (must be crushed) or Cat B (spares only), only for a Cat C.

So if the dealer said they're going to speak with MID and DVLA, then you can sit back and relax a bit?

If either come back to you asking for the car, tell them the dealer's handling it and you'll contact them again in due course

That's a common misconception. Cat A or B cars can be subject to a VIC and put back on the road like any other. The rules you've stated are the ABI guidelines used by the insurer, they're not law. Once the vehicle is in the hands of a salvage company, it's not uncommon to be put back on the road. There are quite a few Cat A and B cars legally on the road today. Some pretty well known examples too, the Escort Cosworth Monte that was rolled, or the FQ400 advertised online a while back.

So the car can be legally put back on the road and could well be Cat A rather than a mistake.

Here we go
https://www.abi.org.uk/~/media/Files/Documents/Pub...

It says what salvage disposers should use their best endeavours to do

However as we've seen before although in the insurer's opinion it should be A, B or C if you really want to mend it, it'll need a Vehicle Inspection Check to keep DVLA happy.
You can guess why if the chassis needs to be swapped out.
Otherwise some aging wrecks with provenance wouldn't get back on the road

If it doesnt go to salvage and the owner/keeper keeps it
doc said:
Where vehicle salvage is retained by the owner/registered keeper and subsequently sold on, they should be made aware by the insurer that the vehicle may have to undergo a VIC test before a replacement V5C is issued by DVLA. The V5C must be returned if it has been provided to the insurer for scrutiny prior to claims settlement.

Zollar works in the insurance industry.

It sounds like he's offering to have a quick look on their database for you.

I went to sell my car recently and on the Autotrader it came up as a Category B write off.

I queried it via Autotrader and it turned out to be an error on the Experian database (I think). A quick call to them and they investigated the matter and fixed it themselves.
